Size of print

I have a model posted on MW that depends on print accuracy with other objects “US Pennies”

It prints for me just fine. I have had a couple people complain that it is not printing at the correct size.
I know there are lots of things that affect the size.
Flow calibration: in BS should account for this.

Filament: they say it is printed in basic PLA. Flow calibration should account for this.

Printer: they say it is printing on an X1C.

Scaling: (the people I talked with say they didn’t scale) I see many people on line that scale other parts and don’t know it is also scaling other things, like the gaps. Then complain it doesn’t work.

Dimension: Using calipers they should be able to measure the opening. (maybe the person does not know how to measure) they say the opening is about .5mm undersized. Beyond what I would expect from out of calibration, but possible.

Slicer: they say they are using BS to slice. Maybe it is a misunderstanding and they are taking the question as Bambu printer, not slicer. Other slicers should work fine. But …

Elephant foot: where it is at it on the print this does not apply.

Print orientation. They say they are not changing orientation. And it does not make since to reorient. I don’t think this is a problem.

Oversized pennies: maybe the particular pennies they are using are oversized. (and they don’t know how to measure)

This situation does not matter. But what else might be causing the problem? Is this a bug or a feature? Maybe I can use the possible issue to an advantage. Or something I need to account for in design of other parts.

Are you posting the model only or the model AND your custom settings?
I just downloaded the .3mf file from Maker World and it carried over way more than just the model. I personally have pretty consistently had models do that from Maker World and it is problematic because it doesn’t reflect my printers physical setup.
If others are not paying attention to that and just send it to the printer after slicing that may cause problems. I suspect the settings carry-over may be an issue.
For me, I just want the model, not the settings from your printer.
I do not have the default settings memorized so can’t really comment on the values because as soon as I see the model change my AMS configuration I think it is a problem and do not try and print the model.
I do have the beta Bambu Studio loaded but this behavior way predates my install of the recently released beta.

Here are pictures of various changes.

First is my configuration prior to loading a model. I have a P1S, 3 AMS, Smooth/High Temp build plate. Picture reflects that.


Upon loading your model, my configuration changes. Along with the alert. It has loaded an X1C even though I selected P1S at Maker World and have P1S as my configured printer.

Here are the settings that get changed. It loaded an X1C, a textured “gold” build plate, and (I guess?) a single AMS with two spools of black PLA Basic loaded, the second one a copy? of the first spool.

If you have tight tolerances, the most likely root cause is … moist filament :wink:

I have not seen that problem with PLA. At least not to the tolerance that applies here. Yes filament moisture affects “tight” tolerance. But at worst the tolerance of wet filament is .1mm. (I have not tested)
Maybe it is a contributing factor.

IMO your users who claim your puzzle wont fit are one of:

  1. Using a non-US / non-canadian coin
  2. Puzzles are an IQ check. These printers are marketed to people who can point at a thing on a phone and “order it”. Some people don’t pass, but still are able to send you an email.
  3. AI/spam engagement bots

The problem is on other printers if I am reading the post correctly.
The OP I assume has measured the print for accuracy on his own machine and printed model.
If OP model size is measurably correct on his printer, then the problem falls on the people printing the model from Maker World.
That third person can have moisture problems for sure but PLA generally is immune to moisture.
The third person may also have tweaks in place on their printer to compensate for various issues with their printer
That is also why I just want the bare model, not the OP’s configuration along with it.
I am offered the option to import the project or just the geometry.
If I opt for the project, I get a .STEP file whereas if I opt for just the geometry I get an .stl

Different filament will shrink to different degrees. I suspect most of those that simply click Print in MW don’t know how to calibrate shrinkage or just don’t bother. This will always cause problems for models that rely on precise dimensions.

As best I can tell, selecting a printer in MW only determines which printer settings are used by the Bambu servers to slice the model before sending the code directly to your printer via Handy. It has no effect on project downloads.

If you are selecting “Download .3MF” or “Open in Studio” from your browser, you will receive the exact settings used by the creator of the model. Plan to review ALL settings before slicing and sending code to your printer. I occasionally use this option, and then change to my printer. This will show me which settings are being changed and I can decide whether to transfer or discard the settings. I might Transfer settings unique to the model for structural reasons, such as number of walls, percent infill, etc., but most often I will choose Discard.

If you just want the bare model, and don’t want to see any of the settings used by the model creator, download the STL/CAD files.

Well, shrinkage is a percentage rather than absolute value. On larger diameters, it’ll compensate through microcracking though.

As for moisture causing issues, there are a bunch of PLA warping cases around which highlight just how much of an issue it can be.
It may not be an issue for you yourself, but who knows what your “customers” put in their machines…
So I’d add a warning that filament should be dried before use. PLA is unfortunately not immune to moisture uptake.

Another thing you can do is to add an increased tolerance print profile. Either by increasing the hole tolerance in CAD, or by using Hole Compensation.

I personally do that. OP is asking why his uploaded model fails on other peoples printers.
The short version of my reply is it might be the custom settings that get carried over when a user subsequently downloads the model to their printer

It is amazing how ignorant (stupid) an average person is. And if you are uploading files, an average person issue is complicated.
(half the people out there are below average) LOL
an on line friend had the same problem. In other conversations with him, he does not appear to be ignorant, or purposely deceptive. But the simple things like how to use calipers is obvious to me, I have used them professionally for 50 years. Without seeing how they are used, it is hard to have a clue they know how to.

moisture in the filament for such a small part with PLA is unlikely to cause that big of difference.
One of the people saying there print was too small was in Florida. But I know he deals with other hydroscopic filaments. I will ask him to reprint with dry filament.
I will ask to measure with calipers both the inside and outside dims.
