Slicer fusing parts with small gaps

Hi, I am trying to print this model to check for printer tolerances: Multi-Type Tolerance Test - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld. However, Bambu Studio fuses the print-in-place objects when the tolerances get small.

The first image is the model cut in half to show that there is a small gap between the objects:

However, when the object is sliced, I get this:

Obviously, there has to be some setting that I am missing that would make the slicer split the parts. However, I can’t seem to find it.

Can someone help me figure out why the fusing is happening? Thank you.

Adjusting xy hole compensation should help this.., in other slicers I believe it’s called horizontal compensation. Set it to a negative (-0.1mm-0.2mm) and see if it slices normally then.

Print the holes and the plugs that go in to them separately. If your intention is to have a gap, those plugs are separate components anyway. Printing them in place doesn’t save you anything except a little print time. And as you have observed, the slicer has problems with gaps that are too small.

The model is specifically designed to test print-in-place tolerances. If I print them separately, it defeats the purpose.

Well, your current tolerance level exceeds the printer’s tolerance. Now, you have to loosen up the tolerances until you get what you want.

Note, I’d hack that model up so it was just the area around one of those holes/plugs so you can print it faster and waste less filament while you work to dial in your minimums.

You don’t say what your spacing is. Typically, I use 0.1mm as the minimum spacing where I want a gap. Same as the default for a brim. Because less than that will glue the brim to the print. Same situation with any gap.

@Tool_Maker I played with the X-Y hole compensation and it makes things worse. Also, according to the help for the setting, it changes the size of holes. The gap between the horizontal objects is not a hole.

Plus, if the sizes of the holes are changed then the test would not be accurate.

@RocketSled I don’t understand what you mean. Are you saying that the printer is not capable of making a horizontal move of less than 0.2mm? I am not asking the printer to print sub-nozzle lines. I would assume that the printer is perfectly capable of leave a 0.1mm gap between objects. And this ability should be reflected in the slicer.

In other words, why would the printer not have the ability to NOT PRINT such a small distance?

Hmm.. I thought that was similar to horizontal compensation for Cura. I guess it’s not.

Then you’ll have to go into the model, which I’m assuming BS is seeing as just one object, and use the slicer to “split to parts” and make sure the slicer knows all those print in part pieces are not part of the same object. Should just be right click on the model and choose split to parts .

Ahh, found something - “Slice gap closing radius”.

It was set to 0.049. If I set it to 0.01, the gaps in the model are there:

Hi Void, did you read the last paragraph of the description on that model? Those left two holes print solid “by design” (don’t ask me why that’s a feature). It does go on to say this could potentially be adjusted out, which is of course what you are doing… I just wanted to point that out in case it was missed.

@MaxThreeD, yes I did miss it. Although, re-reading it, the last sentence is what matters. I wanted to see how low can the printer go, so I had to change the settings to make them separate bodies.

With the adjustment, the second from the left vertical pin (0.15) comes loose with a bit of persuasion.
