I am having a similar issue. New to 3D printing, but not new to 3D modeling.
I am making a crab measuring stick for my first 3D to Print Experiment. The model slices fine, and my first prototype in PLA worked with flush text. Adjust some things and set it up to print in 2 colors of ABS. Now when I slice it the graduation marks and the text won’t show up properly.
I have tried a different font and thicker lines, still with no luck.
Is the material the limitation here? Curious why my earlier version worked and this one won’t.
Tried archaic, detect thin walls, changing orientation, repainting, layer height, all with no luck.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated!
AJ
I tried to upload the file and since I’m a new user it won’t let me, sorry.
Thanks Jon. Ok here is the 3mf file and a picture of the PLA prototype
Now I did try to make the 1/2” marks a little smaller, and can get rid of them if needed, but not sure why that is affecting the lines. also in the picture the gray is pretty visible underneath. Separate issue but is there a way to paint that better?
I have an X2D. And was planning to print both colors from the main nozzle as I haven’t tested the Aux with ABS yet. There is also text and marks on the bottom face as well, but the version I sent was a new test and didn’t color everything. Also, I modeled the text at 1/16 thick asl well as the lines, so the aren’t just surface markings.
There is an import issue with this model. This is common when importing models from CAD that are pre-coloured. When you split it to parts you can see that the majority of the text isn’t recognized correctly.
There is no need to repair/fix the model. The issue is the painting that Studio applied during import (the bucket icon next to the object). Fixing a model removes paint, but this can be removed directly.
In Prepare mode, select Crab Stick V5 Text both sides test.Copy.stl in the object tree and click the paint bucket icon (or paint tool on main toolbar).
In the paint tool settings window click “Erase all painting” and close the paint tool (click on it’s icon in the main toolbar).
Keep the object selected and change its filament to black (not required but makes subsequent step simpler).
Now r-click again on the single Crab Stick V5 Text both sides test.Copy.stl and break it up into parts.
Find the main body part and drag it to the top of the parts list. (In “Crab Stick v5 For Print.3mf” the main body part is “Crab Stick V5 Text both sides test.Copy.stl_32”.)
With the main body part selected, change its filament to white. So now the only white filament assignment is on the main body and all the markings should stay black.
This should have nothing to do with the actual filaments used, so I don’t know why it would have worked properly for the PLA test but not subsequently. There must be some difference in the model or export/import process… or something.
I will try this as well, thanks! Trying to finish up work so I can focus on this. I will let you all know how it goes. Haven’t gotten a chance to work on adjusting the model yet.
Everyone, thank you! Got both sides of text to print great! Parting it out and coloring in reverse after making the small text larger worked awesome; printing the second one now. Cheers for helping a newcomer make his first design-to-print project turn out better than imagined! Will be uploading to Maker World after it’s first run this weekend!
