So can you get ripped off even if you are not in a contest?

i posted this model
PROOOF and never considered the option of a “castle” key… there for i didn’t put it into the castle contest… it simply didn’t fit within the guidelines… i have reported this 2 times now… currently waiting on the second report… here is the person and profile under review… check it out and tell me you wouldn’t be mad??? didn’t know keys would be in the contest… da fuq?

Post a comment on their make; call them out on that and shame them publicly. keep repeating the “name and shame” game for as long as they keep your make as being theirs. I know it worked very well in a number of cases…eventually those thieves being chased off that platform. Might very well work here in the same manner.

It’s also one of the main reasons I’m no longer sharing stuff here and elsewhere.
I rather accept you remixing or remodeling my make, but being honest and giving credit where credit is due, than seeing arseholes like the one you point out, claiming my work is his/hers. So, rather than having to deal with such arseholes, i prefer to control the distribution of my makes through digital individual licensing

First of all, he uploaded a step-file, which suggests (not proves) he designed it himself:

Secondly, his ‘main’ design is a two part construction that connects together:

image

That said, if you scale the two models to the same size you can see that the geometries completely overlap (but are not exactly the same):

So you can see that he designed the key ‘from scratch’. The question however is, did he trace your design to every detail? So my question to you is, how did you get your design? Did you use the game’s 3D file, did you have some good reference images or did you have to do a lot of guess work to come up with your relative dimensions?

If it is the latter then you can quite confidently assume he traced your design (which in my eyes is stealing, in general it is a gray area, and MW handles grey areas as pristine white when it suits them). If there are good source files out there that were the basis for your design he might have used them as well and explain the extreme similarities.

Edit: for completion, here is a key that was uploaded in '23:

Adam’s on the left, yours in the middle, old one on the right

The old one is the odd one out, but still extremely similar. What is too similar?

Your title makes no sense. What are you mad about? It’s not like it’s your design, it’s a key from Zelda, and tbh theirs is far superior. Yours is very rough and has some glaring anomalies that actually suggests you modified another file, cut it in half but missed some parts and thin edges, mirrored it so that it’s symmetrical and called it a day.

If you’re just mad that they entered it in a contest where it’s irrelevant, report it and move on. They clearly did not steal from you though. You don’t own the idea of recreating a Zelda key or the scale of it. You weren’t the first and they won’t be the last.

I take model theft quite seriously, and I can confidently say I never actually saw his model before I went to base mine off the most current Zelda game . However, I will point out that the game model files are out there for people who want to do quick and dirty mesh remixes as this appears to be (I purposely did not, because I didn’t want to use Nintendo IP directly, as that’s asking for trouble).

In any event, the original complaint is hilarious in light of @drewcifer’s low quality walrus, which looks to be another game mesh rip instead of a fresh clean proper model.

There’s a deep irony to his complaints when he “rips off my walrus” . C.f. Sylvester the Silly Walrus by Adam L - MakerWorld vs BULBUS WALLRUS by jomocomo - MakerWorld a year later.

I would never complain as clearly the walrus is based on another common character that neither of us owns… but it’s a funny situation where I could claim that he “ripped me off” (I don’t think he did, but mine was first in the walrus case).

The walrus appears to be a direct rip of the Nintendo game file I just looked up… so … uh… yea… not very smart posting a direct copy of Nintendo IP. I would and have used such models as a reference , but I would not think of posting them directly as my own.

P.S. Keys feel like fair game in a castle contest… ever heard the phrase “keys to the castle” ? It’s just a creative interpretation on the theme IMO.

Subtext/Rejoinder: I look forward to you putting forward your CAD history or modeling process as proof that you’ve put in non-trivial effort and are not just passing off game files as yours and/or remeshing them. I also look forward to your explanation around the Walrus. I’ve shown you mine, where’s yours?.

If you start slinging mud, you should be sure you’ve actually accused the right person. I would also consider just… dropping this whole issue and moving on. It might be the wise move.

so is makerworld its ok to steal just as long as its from makerworld? seems thats happened a few times then… as far as i can tell they leave the policing up to the community and just settle things as they come… like we are petulant little kids or something.

let me add this… this wouldn’t have been a big deal if someone wouldn’t have entered a stolen model in a contest.

Don’t ask me, pal. It’s not my platform nor my rules. You’ve got a grievance, take it up with their big honcho (if you can get hold of him) and follow their process.
I’ve given you a few pointers on how you might (possibly) tackle your problem, based on what I’ve seen working on other platforms. However, if you don’t like the way the platform admins treat you, or how the other users (allegedly) benefit from your work, you can either stop using the platform, or can stop sharing models at all, or just those you give 4 free. That way, everything will be under your control at all times. Good luck pal. It looks like you gonna need it.

He didn’t steal anything from you . You both stole from Nintendo if anything lol.

In fact, how exactly did you create your model, what software? Can you prove you didn’t modify someone else’s file? Because the evidence that you did is there, yet you didn’t attribute anyone.

If you claim you didn’t, explain the anomalies via proof of how you made it and how they appeared. Or just stop crying about someone else doing a better job than you at recreating the same item from an extremely popular game. All your posts are always so angry and accusatory for no reason.

i understand your frustration, but objects from known titles such games or movies, can’t be claimed as your design if you found someone uploaded the same object idea, but you can only report it if he stole your file and reuploaded it as his.
in the case you reported the object, the creator can submit an appeal with a work flow proof (if they really did create it from scratch), then you can’t do anything about it.

you want to see copied designs, and no one complaining about it? search of (sliding box lid).

just added info: the key design is not related to contest in the 1st place, yet it is still there XD.

drewcifer has left the chat. (and makerworld)

Maybe projecting your own actions onto others wasn’t such a good idea afterall?

lol, blocked him awhile ago. Still don’t know what he was going on about but I loved the answers he got.

Yeah several of his past posts made absolutely no sense either.

He thinks he owns a Nintendo IP because he uploaded a sloppy model and no one else can ever upload another version again.

Huh, it turns out being hostile, petulant and not having a ton of actual value to add to a community leads to the community turning on you… who knew?

You’d think these people would have the sense to spam their junk and be quiet instead of drawing attention to themselves… but… yea… nope.

I wasn’t out to shame this guy before he started throwing poop… but if you come and try to throw accusations… well, i’m going to try and reply with a legitimate honorable defense… and that might include digging and highlighting that your hands arn’t particularly clean.

Oh well, justice served and all that… now we can all move on with our day.

Simpsons did it first…
