Solid body colors replaced by surface painting. Please let us turn this off!

It used to be that we could import a colored 3MF-file from Fusion 360 and it would import each body as a different color. Granted it usually weren’t the correct colors, but that was easy to fix using the Project Filaments tab.

With this new update everything just gets painted superficially (painting the surface instead of coloring the entire solid objects). Even pressing ‘cancel’ causes the model to be painted one solid color. This forces us to 1. reset the painting and 2. pick the color of every single object in the object tree manually.

For those who don’t know, using separate volumes for colors instead of painting the surface gives far superior results in terms of quality.

As a professional character designer for 3D printing THIS ADDS HOURS TO MY WORKFLOW.

I found this on the Github page, I hope this means volume/object data importing will be made possible soon:

Please please please please Bambu create a way for us to just import the old way.

If you can specify exactly studio version numbers (don’t say “current”, get the number) of when it last worked and first broke and attach an example fusion 360 and 3mf made out of the smallest number of primitives that just illustrates the behavior (don’t say “just create X in fusion 360 and export it as Y”, do it and attach them) that helps immensely with triage.

Old studio release are here. On windows if you use the .zip files you can test an old version without uninstalling your current.

Thanks Krellboy. It’s Bambu Studio 2.5.0.66. I reinstalled 2.4 and it works again…

In terms of 3MF file, I understand why you ask, but I’d rather not share them publicly as they are paywalled designs.I don’t think we’re looking for some kind of bug here anyway. This change must have been deliberate and is easily reproducable with any non-bambu 3MF.

The same post on Reddit is gaining a ton of support, so many others seem to relate to this problem. In general I don’t think many people are loving this latest update… To me it seems like it’s making everyone’s lives harder with the auto-painting.

My goal with this post is moreso to reach the Bambu Studio development team and signal to them that it might be a good idea to somehow enable people to import the old way, because right now there is no such option.

Sounds good, thanks for the update, I looked at the reddit post also. There isn’t anything wrong with your request, I was just trying to improve your odds. Devs are busy and by frontloading bisecting and test creation onto them we are more likely just to pick up another bug instead.

Maybe I should have added that it’s not just Bambu Lab people who work on or contribute to Studio, there are many of us who hang out here. I am a 360 user and will likely use this feature some time in the future, but without exact version bracketing and sample objects (not your proprietary models, sample ones you created just to illustrate the problem) I’m not going to bisect it or create test models until it becomes a problem for me.

This. Just about every request I’ve posted on the Github they either responded to or assigned to someone to work on. I could be wrong but I don’t believe any of the actual devs come here, I’m not sure about Reddit.

I don’t think the Bambu Lab devs hang out here either, but there are at least 5 other Studio contributors here and probably as many as 15 other Orcaslicer contributors. If you can get us interested and we spot the problem and can fix it, we’ll submit it as a pull request which gets a lot more attention. Worst case is we’ll submit it as an issue in a format that they’ll actually be interested in picking up.

I should write up a guide or something, it’s nice that people submit a repro but it really helps if it’s the simplest possible model that exhibits the problem and they’ve started with no preset changes and only made the absolute minimum changes necessary to reproduce the bug.

This is exactly the situation that I am running into. I completely agree with your assessment that separate volumes result in superior quality as compared to surface painting.

I have found a work around that kind of works. That is to load the 3mf file, select OK in the 3mf color dialog box, and then right click on the object and select reload from disk. It then loads up like it used to.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing!!

I agree, having separate parts colored instead of painting the surface gives a far superior result. Why is this not an option. I don’t like painting surfaces and I use separate parts in my models for easy coloring in assembly view. Importing them and having the ability to assign colors to parts is a much better outcome than painting surfaces. Now when I import, I have to cancel the coloring, then go into the paint tool and select “remove all color”. Its a pain to have to add this additional step for all my models to get rid of the surface paint. Am I missing something and doing this incorrectly?

This solution works fantastic, thank you - was loosing my mind.

They def. need to turn this off or fix it in some manor.
