Split into Parts, can assign colors to parts, but parent overules

Hi,

So I have a multi-color model I’ve downloaded from Makerworld. But I want to change the color of a particular part.

I successfully split the model into parts. I can change the filaments for each of the parts I want.

But the parent object still has a color selected.

And if I reslice it, is uses the same original colors.

How do I fix this, so I can reassign filaments to each part?

Hi, is there painting applied to the model anywhere? Paint bucket icon next to the main object in the tree view?

Sometimes (often) painting will interfere with filaments directly applied to parts. If there’s paint applied, you could try removing it all by clicking on that paint bucket icon and then “Erase all painting” in the paint tool window.

In some cases the order of the parts in the object tree can matter (they can be dragged around to re-order within the parent object). Settings on later parts (towards bottom) will override wherever the parts intersect, which can sometimes cause a smaller part higher up in the tree to be “ignored” because of a larger part later in the list. That sometimes happens with things like text or other “sticker” like parts which are fully embedded in the main object (with just the surface showing).

Other than that, the filaments applied directly to parts should work properly. If painting and ordering is not the problem, perhaps attach the project here so we can take a look. It’s normal for the top-level object to have/show a filament applied… that acts as a sort of default, but any filament applied to parts should be honored.

In addition to the answer provided by @MaxThreeD, remember you can change the colour assignments when you go to print, you do not have to change anything the downloaded model if you are not changing any model information.

Example (assumes an AMS is involved)

Downloaded model has red, green, blue & yellow.

You wish you use black, white, cyan & magenta.

  • Do not change anything in the prepare tab, not the filaments or anything.
  • Use the slice button, do not change anything here either.
  • Use the print button. Here we do things.
  • Look at the red, green, blue & yellow swatches in the print window.
  • Tap each one in turn, choose the colour that should be used in place.
  • When you have chosen the preferred colour choices, you can print.

You may find it easier to create a new build plate, select the part you want and right-click, select clone and confirm one copy. Drag it to the new build plate if it isn’t there already. This will help if there are conflicting parts you do not require.
