I have tried 3 filaments from the AMS (PET G and PLA), and things don’t work properly. The filament gets fed in, but the filament becomes clumpy and then dragged along as it prints.
I got the error message: the filament buffer signal is abnormal; the spring may be stuck, or the filament may be tangled.
How can this happen when the filament seems to be flowing through the nozzle?

PS I think there have been some unusual noise during printing. Not sure if something was causing a strain or not.
The buffer acts like a shock absorber to help regulate the flow of filament from the AMS to the nozzle.
There are 3 motors that run in series between the AMS and the Extruder.
Primary Feeder---->Filament Hub---->Extruder---->Build Plate

Are you able to move the highlighted blue section in the direction of the red arrow? Does it catch anywhere?
You should be able to print with the buffer open as shown in the picture and see it “buffering”.
Are you able to provide picture(s) of the failing print? Clumping and dragging is often an adhesion problem. There may be separate problems occuring.
They give a description of how the buffer works in the wiki. It releases and compresses spring to feed varying amounts of filaments so as JonRaymond says, you should be able to see it in action.
Print something like a cube that is going to be repetitive and watch the buffer.
I installed the tubing incorrectly in my buffer, and that led to the buffer getting hung with the spring in the fully compressed position.

yes, I am able to move that part with no issue.
As for adhesion, I use hair spray and it has worked every time for the last 20+ prints. Is there a time when you need to scrub everything off?
I should add I was getting red lights flashing, and after slightly jiggling the cables they turned white. But it has now happened several times. So something is off it seems.
Will run it tomorrow and watch the buffer and video the clumping of the filament.

I do not use any glues, hair sprays or anything like that. I use a smooth build plate. I do clean off my build plate every 3 - 6 prints. When the first filament is extruded across the front of the build plate and when it starts to not stick to bed, usually at front left end, time to wash the build plate for me. That or if I see my fingerprints on the build plate.
Is hair spray water soluble? I assume so else it would be rough to remove from hair. I personally use a degreaser rather than dish soap.
Update…problem still. It appears to not be the AMS. I tried with AMS and manual feeding, 3 filaments, and 2 bed plates (1 is new).
The temperatures seem fine.
Does this mean it’s something in the nozzle unit? Can that explain these results?
Is that the gold plate you are using?
The two passes the nozzle makes across the front of the build plate, does it look as ragged in real life as it does in the picture?
You have run the auto calibration and it passes or does it hang at some percentage complete value?
Do you have a spare nozzle that you have not used yet?
Solved! Apparenly my last print before errors came up was really stuck and I had to use force to get it off, and in so doing, I guess the build plate moved. Is the mis-alignment on the top build plate or on its supporting structure bed?
