Strange brim around part

Hello,

I’m printing rather large organizers from ABS and while the quality is in general great, there is some kind of “brim” around the part at a certain height. As I’m following the Z-banding thread, I thought at first, that the problem might be the wall generator and print order. But after changing this to Arachne and inner-outer-inner, the brim persists.


Measured from the bottom, this brim starts at round 3.8mm, which is where the inner bottom surface is located.

So a guess is some kind of over extrusion? The filament however is calibrated, and the surface looks good. Also the walls are very smooth… Or could it be, that the inner radius, which starts around there, causes some problems with wall generation?

Every input is welcome to find the cause of this.

Its ABS?

Are you sure it isn’t warping slightly at the start and the slight dislodging is causing that?

The bottom surface is very flat, and there is no visible warping. So far, I got very good prints with a chamber temperature of 65°C and the heatbed at 120°C.
I checked out your link, and this doesn’t look promising…

The area outlined in red will be difficult to print as the overhang is too much. The failing of this feature may be translating up.

You are much better to modify the feature so it has a 45 degree chamfer instead of the filet on the print bed.

Its caused by the sudden speed/layer time change.
You can make it go away by 99.9% , by tuning your filaments to perfection.

I’d avoid using the word “brim” to describe this, as brim is something that is attached to the build plate.

You have a [very aggressive] Benchy Hull Line, brought forth by the large interior solid surface nestled inbetween two sets of walls.

Google for fixes on that, it’s a rabbit hole. Alter geometry, slow down, speed up, use modifiers on that surface, reverse direction on even, print infill first, lots of dubiously useful general advice. You are entering the Material Science zone.

Yeah sorry for not elaborating more on what tuning means, but honestly to get THAT To go away, you need to do and redo everything.

Personally I would try printing it with an actual brim to see if it helps.

It looks like over-extrusion and it looks like the kind of over extrusion that happens with warping.

You say the bottom is flat but it looks like a curved edge just below it. That curve could be warping enough to cause it.

Also you might try a 4 or 5mm skirt to see if it helps.

Hopefully you figure it out.

There is a bug on a recent, but older version Studio. For me, the brim option created an additional brim up higher than the bed level. The newest version fixed this. That said… this doesn’t look like mine did when I saw the issue, but you can try updating and checking.

If that doesn’t turn out to be the issue, I’d ask if you are using modified profiles? Something like a extreme line width seems like it could create an odd artifact at the edge of a chamfer (though I’ve never tried that).

Did it show in the sliced preview?

Yes, it would show in the sliced file. But note, it was pretty obviously not going to print. It was a full fledged brim 5, 10, or 15mms up the print in mid air.

Now that you mention it, I also printed a smaller part with the same surface-to-wall feature. But on that part, I used a chamfer as you suggest, and there almost no hull line is visible. I will try this…
@NothingHam I’m fine with a visible line, but that thing is just to much…

I will try again with a chamfer and larger brim, just to be sure that warping isn’t the problem, when I get new filament and some time on the printer.
