Strange failure on X1C with PETG HF

Recently I got a spool of BambuLab PETG HF from a friend of mine to help him with some prints. Initially I had good results with some light defects which I suspected were due to the slightly wet filament. However, towards the end of the spool today I had a really strange result, which I was wondering how it’s called so that I can look for solutions:

Is this spaghetti? is it clogging of the extruder and or hotend?

As you can see I’m using PEI Textured Plate & X1C with 0.4 nozzle. Worth mentioning that just before that print I had the same model printed flawlessly. Both prints were with liquid glue applied to the plate.

Any ideas?

Partial clog, slipping extruder drive wheel, or filament diameter is under-sized in this area of the spool.

However, PETG will soak up moisture pretty quick. If humidity is decent, overnight exposed to ambient air can cause significant changes. You say “wet” but nothing about “drying”. Drying it is worth a shot.

IMO this looks like a failure of your Z offset for this print. Zero squish, no bottom layer attachment. I’d say its a fluke, but if it recurs to dig into the calibration sequence, make sure nothings attached to the nozzle/under the plate/general level problems

Zero, or as close to it as you can get…

Ok an update from me:

  1. I’ve disassembled and cleaned the extruder (no visible clogging, still I’ve cleaned as described in the tutorial on Bambu’s site)
  2. I’ve also cleaned the hotted nozzle with the tin pin that came with the printer
  3. Changed the wiping thingy with a new one
  4. Changed the cutting thingy with a new one
  5. Re-ran all printer calibrations.
  6. Tried with a different PETF filament which I’ve used before and it is dry


… unfortunately still I’m getting undesirable results. It’s not that I’m very experienced, nor I had printed thousands of hours on the X1C, but up to now I only got problems due to my mistakes in the slicer and / or due to model (which I design) and it is barely printable.

This is the result I just got with the different PETG - it somehow collapsed one of the supports. Model is not mine, it’s form MakerWorld and it has good feedback.

One observation is that after the hotted finishes a task, for example pooping it wipes the nozzle and then it goes doing something and while moving a small amount of the fillament continues to flow. I haven’t noticed that before.

On another print it what it finishes a line it goes up (the plate goes down but there is a visible stringing, but no a tin one, but rather bulk that is dragged in the direction of the head. Thus it takes a way part of the last line which is already printed. I suspect something similar happened with this support, so that it can end up at the back :confused:

This looks just like how PETG looks when it’s wet. All that spaghetti is because PETG is oozing out the nozzle when it isn’t supposed to, during travel moves, and it gets deposited on the next thing the nozzle comes in contact with.

If that’s the print, which is fairly robust, the spaghetti sticks to the print (as seen in the picture). But if it hits a support, which is pretty delicate, it may knock the support over.

How do you know your PETG is dry?

I dried mine in the printer but when i put it in the AMS the humidity level jumped from 10% from my previous filaments to 23% with the 2 new PETG filaments. Do i need to dry it again?

The “in the printer” method isn’t very effective unless you leave it there a really long time. Like, days IMO. Better than nothing, but not by much.

The AMS is not a dryer. It just slows down how long it takes for the filament to get wet again. Wet filament going in is going to stay pretty wet.

You need a dedicated dryer.

Thanks. Im drying them all again in the printer. I knew the AMS isnt a dryer. I did print off the silica bead containers to help keep things dry

Ok, mystery is solved - it was the wet filament that I brought in AMS that ruined everything (same as the other guy above).

Long story short - I dried each filament that was in the AMS individually and then brought it back in the AMS with fresh silica. Everything looks perfect :sunglasses:

As I said I am not very experienced and there were few things I missed / messed. When I open a filament I either put it in the AMS where I have extra silica containers OR in a box with lots of silica. This way I generally have relatively dry filaments. I wasn’t aware that adding a wet filament in the AMS will ruin that much the others that are already there… lesson learned :laughing:

The other thing was that I expected wet filaments to just cause small bubbles and irregular surfaces, but not such a disaster….lesson learned :laughing:

I was considering to upgrade to new AMS 2 or to get Sunlu E2… ordered the E2. Probably an overkill, but I want to start printing some engineering stuff once I sort out the air filtration.
