That’s funny. Xi Jinping holds a Bachelor of Engineering in chemical engineering. 3 out of 7 members of the political bureau have college degrees in STEM areas. There’s a number with STEM area doctorates too.
Here in the states we have college dropouts, podcasters, and billionaires who bought their way in. The resident has a BS in economics and has threatened lawsuits if the college reveals his grades.

This not an exceptionally text-walled thread… one of my reply already addressed those.
The excuse I always heard was “getting the American experience”.
They never say they are just looking for a degree, because that just sounds scummy.
That’s not “other”. It’s called a preceding degree without practice. It’s irrelevant to such degree that it doesn’t hold any credibility anymore.
“Other degree” would be, for example, a PhD in engineering (same level degree as his top degree).
I’m afraid I have to give the upper hand to someone who actually got a technical degree over someone with a blow-off or no degree at all. Here were put plumbers and podcasters in charge of critical government functions.
Nothing against plumbers and podcasters. But don’t expect much insight into power generation, climate change, or really any technical area. They simply do not have the background required to make intelligent decisions in technical fields.
I don’t think you can argue (at least not credibly) that China’s leaders are less well versed in technological areas than US leaders.

Why do we even discuss this? Who thought that engineer in a leadership position is a good idea to begin with? Over years I’ve had quite a few technical people as leaders and all of them, while being amazing people, were completely incapable of an actual managing/director positions. Being good engineer doesn’t mean that the one can do manager job. It’s a dedicated position for people who specialize in such. And yes, there are tons of fools there too.

I’d agree with your take on the podcasters but really that’s a different matter. Degree without practice doesn’t make one an engineer. You can respect them, but that still doesn’t make someone in their 50s, 60s, 70s that never worked as an engineer for a single day in their life an engineer. Which is what these politburo leaders are. The back and forth above was about if “China is run by engineers” holds water.
