Strengthening a Sword Print Made with Silk PLA

I recently printed a model of a hand holding a sword. The overall print quality looks good, but the sword itself is very fragile and breaks easily. I suspect this might be partly due to using Silk PLA, since I wanted that metallic finish, but I’m not sure if the material choice is the main issue.
Does anyone have tips on how I can make the sword stronger? Would changing materials, adjusting print settings, or reinforcing the design help?

I changed the quality from default to .16mm. I also added supports.

I would suggest looking at the “inside” of the sword after you sliced it in Bambu Studio. Maybe it is just very thin, so I would certainly select “detect thin wall”, and maybe raise the wall thickness to 3 or 4.

Silk WILL be very delicate. Always. Yes, increase walls to 3 or 4 and 10 to 15% infill

As far as I can see, the “sword” is oriented along the Z axis, so it is “naturally” fragile. The question, of course, is what exactly is meant by “fragile” here, because it can mean many things… from “cannot be removed from the build plate at all” … to “cannot withstand normal use/display on the wall” … to “cannot be used in real combat”…

By the way, it’s not just the sword that’s wrong, the hand/fist/fingers holding it don’t look quite normal to me either… :slight_smile:

Back to question - I’m no expert, but to make it stronger, I’d use the modifier for “sword” and set 100 walls or smtng like that, but I don’t think it will overcome the “Z-axis curse” too much… or change the orientation of the model if possible.

Lay the sword horizontal and use petg for support so it’seasierto remove. Increase the infill and walls if possible.
