Stringing on P1S with AMS

New to 3d printing and suffering with stringing and slightly lower print quality than expected.

Some reading leaves me wondering if it is the retraction settings or I am missing something else.

P1S with AMS.
Original nozzle.
Filament dried in heater, AMS dry kit installed and holding sub 10% RH (A dryness rating according to the printer).
Using Sunlu PLA+, appropriate print profile set in the AMS (printer sets it to 220 nozzle temp)

Initially wondered if it was nozzle temperature, but a temp tower print showed stringing at all temp steps.

Any help is really appreciated.

Reatraction testing for reference, negligible difference in dealing with the really fine stringing until get right up to 1.75mm - but I still get it on the body of the object and one string across the tips

Have you tried turning down the heat in the chamber?

I actually tried various nozzle temps, retraction settings and filament profiles earlier only to find the printing got worse and worse - ended up going back to default and had the worst print yet!

Could well be the chamber was a lot hotter at that point. Will try it from cold with the door open and see if that makes a difference.

Next step after that is trying a different roll of filament just to sense check.

Yeah, I’ve had a lot of success with the door open. Also, is the AMS new? When I got my AMS 2 Pro, the first couple prints were horrible and failed, after that it was stringing, but after maybe 4-5 prints it was fine.

About 50 hours print time. The stringing seems a lot worse now on this Sunlu PLA+ but was there slightly on the smaller reels of Bambu filament, which I used to get it setup then print various tools and utility items.

The printer location is liable to temperature change so optimistic about this idea, will sort that soon.

It took me some time to figure out when I was having problems, but if your printers are located where temperatures can swing too much that can cause all kinds of problems. I was having inconsistent seemingly random problems. The room where my printers are has the HVAC vent in the corner of the room on the wall next to the door – and the printers are on the same wall as the door and in the path of the air coming out of the vent. I ended up 3d printing a deflector and my random mystery problems went away.

Interesting! My printer is actually in a outbuilding that is heated when I am working ~3 days a week.

The printer is up high on top of storage so hottest point of the room - shouldn’t be more than 25 degrees c and would’ve thought that was acceptable, but with the door shut and this filament maybe not.

Nothing to lose by playing around a bit more.

This was a Neptune 4, and only was used for things too big to print on a Bambu printer so it did not get that much use but when it was used it generally would mean long prints. The printer was being hit with cold air - I’d have parts come off the bed, wash it in soapy water, sometimes that seemed to fix it, (ac cycled off) sometimes not. I’d get layers that wouldn’t stick together (AC on) then a reprint might work fine (AC off) then one day I wondered if there was buildup on the back of the nozzle that I wasn’t seeing and got my head down low to look and the cold air blasted me in the face and turned on my brain’s lightbulb.

Would certainly be less dramatic of a change in an enclosed printer, but may be enough for effect and as you mention can’t hurt to try .

Not a dryer, a dry kit as I said.

Ahhh! When I see “a (whatever) kit” I assume it means something that was sold in the aftermarket as an add on to the thing, vs something you made. just wouldn’t occur to me to call my AMS drying pods a “kit” :slight_smile: Anyway thanks for the improved clarity, and good luck on the stringing problem!

Top left was the ‘kit’ I printed - as an aside it’s worth noting that the hygrometer is inserted into the middle unit and is surrounded by dessicant, so I take the reading with a pinch of salt. It’s sat at 10% (the lowest these hygrometers go) since install a few weeks ago though.

I printed and use a very similar set of pods in my AMS2. The hygrometer in the middle desiccant pod has said 10% since I made it in July. The AMS’s own reading has increased from 12% to 14% in that time. Ambient humidity in the room is 30–34%. A bluetooth Hygrometer I dropped in between a couple of spools is reporting 28% humidity. I have a feeling that’s the most realistic of the three.

So this issue first came up and persisted the whole time I was using Sunlu PLA+. Moved over to Bambu basic and it was like a magic switch, prints were way higher quality, stringing almost zero.

This week I have gone back to Sunlu to print some bigger models and it’s been a nightmare again. Stringing at any temp, oozing, blobbing, accumulation on nozzle. Doesn’t seem to matter what settings (temp, retraction, infill etc) or model the printer result is far worse.

All filament was dried for 5+ hours, all stored in sealed bags etc.

Unsure if conclusion is the filament but I won’t be buying Sunlu PLA+ again.
