Studio vs negative objects

I am stuck trying to design a workstand for an electronic device in Studio because Orca does not yet support the P2S.

Studio really struggles with negative spaces. Sometimes they just vanish.

In the particular example shown here, slicing reorients the negative objects. It also warns me that they need supports, but of course does not actually add any because you don’t support negative space.

I would really prefer to create the shape I want without using cutouts and trying to angle them, but I don’t know if that can be done in studio. All of the shapes seem to be prefab and not modifiable except as to size.

I think your time will be better spent learning to use an actual CAD program. For functional items pick a parametric program that allows easy modifications, because often several iterations are needed to get everything correct. I like the free version of Fusion, but Onshape is also very powerful.

Studio is not designed to create complex shapes and as you have found, attempting to use it for that purpose can be extremely frustrating.

Have you tried using the boolean mesh to actually subtract the negative part from the model? This won’t allow you to modify the cutout after performing it but the slicer will have less issues with the model.

As @lkraus suggested modeling the part in CAD is probably the best way. Negative parts in Bambu Studio is really only for a quick and dirty fix/modification.

I tried Fusion. Too many dials and switches, so to speak.

Open that thing with MS 3D Builder.
Edit → Split

Rotate/move the plane. Select Keep bottom (or whatever suits your fancy)

Save as, i generally keep it as stl or obj but do whatever you want here

Load it in your slicer, youll be good to go

no loss of triangle resolution. (if you try this in some other simple tools, like tinkercad, it loses resolution like JPEGs do when you save them a lot) MS.3DB’s a good tool for quick simple cuts, combines, and SVG embosses. It falls apart trying to do anythign complex.

I exported as STL. Bambu Studio offered to do a mesh operations, so I accepted. The STL looked fine - negative objects gone but spaces where they needed to be. I reopened the STL in Studio and it looked fine. Then I tried to slice it.

Another WTF moment.
So I tried to export the model as STL again after some attempts to add parts that Studio refused to place where I wanted them. Bambu Studio said it needed a mesh operation, so I said OK. Then I got this message:

So I uploaded it to the STL Repair site.

Since I already have Orca, I think I will try importing it there and see if I can get that to work properly.

Orca can’t deal with it, either. I don’t even know how to deal with the errors it gives.

Ironically, both programs tell me how many triangles are present, but neither one will let me draw an effing triangle.

Cool! How do I do that on my Mac?

I am running up-to-date Windows 11 on my Mac. MS 3D Builder does not appear to be available for download for me. Any idea how to get it?

Support for 3D Viewer will be coming to an end on June 30th 2026. You can explore the Babylon.js Sandbox as a modern 3D viewing alternative.
