Sunlu AMS Heater observation

Hi all,

I received my Sunlu AMS Heater today and I have a small observation I want to share:

The included hex key is ever so slightly oversized and will not fit into the original Bambu AMS lid hinge screws NOR the supplied Sunlu AMS Heater hinge screws.

This leaves you with three options:

  1. Find a correctly sized hex key (which might be tricky given the odd shape)
  2. File or sand the hex key to size.
  3. Hammer the hex key into the screw sockets.

I opted for #3.

You have now obligated yourself to produce multiple videos and walkthroughs.

Always go with three, it’s hammer time!

Some additional observations after another couple of weeks of use:

  • Make sure to replace any desiccant containers, spool adapters, etc., that are made of PLA, before you start using a heater like this. Replace them with PETG. The increase in heat will deform the spool adapters under load. Also, desiccant jars that go into the filament rolls may suddenly unscrew themselves with the intermittent temperature changes.
  • Keep the vent on top open when running the heater. Failure to do so will drive up the humidity in the AMS.
  • Make sure to rotate any PLA filament rolls in the AMS. The heat will put a kink into the filament right where it feeds into the AMS Feeding Funnel, which may prevent proper feeding.
  • Cardboard rolls will contract and shed their spool adapters.
