How has this been working out for you? Anything you’d change? Thinking about grabbing the sunlu s4 while it’s on sale if this is a good long term solution.

I used the AMS Mini from Makeworld and the S4 is under my desk
You might want to peel that film off of the S4.
I just received my S4, it’s good to know the AMS will feed that length of filament.
Mine is brand new I just finished setting everything up and printing the AMS Mini swapping the hardware over and I still need to do some adjustments and put more clips on the PTFE tubes. I also disabled my whole AMS Lite and found out it does fit right inside the S4, buuuut the spools are 2 cm too big on each side.
So my next project is to print 4 new spools around 1.5 cm less on diameter and test it. I do believe it will be good. I want to do that because the AMS lite spool holders are springed to roll back filament on the spools. I will keep the community posted.
It seems like our S4’s arrived at about the same time, I removed the film and started drying day one, I need storage bins urgently. Clearly you are doing a lot of research (RESPECT). The spool resize concept is interesting, I order filament refills, so I print my own spools, if the spools were smaller, less filament usage.
I’ll be interested in your results of the size change.
There are some items to look at on maker world that may be of interest, AMS Lite and S4 integration projects - just search “sunlu s4 ams lite”
I saw all the S4 related 3D models everywhere but I like the AMS mini a lot and decided to go with it. The adaptation to put the AMS on top with a blue lead (post on Makerworld) keeps the feeder on top and by then I had printed the whole AMS mini system. I even tried to modify the lid on that project but 3D modeling is a MISSION and when I finished mine there were a gazillion errors then I gave up on the that.
About the spools, I measured a brand new one (Sunlu) and even removing 1.5cm from it you will still 0.5cm Of clearance so you filament would fall out the spool.
The only thing about this project (putting the who AMS body inside the S4) is that I will need to cut of the rib plastic under the lid of the dryer. So before I do that I need to be 10000% sure that it will work LoL .
At my current setup I’m having a little problem here and there where the feeder it isn’t strong enough to put the filament from the S4 because the distance from the feeder to the S4 through PTFE tubes is 2 meters hahaha. I know that sounds insane but the problem doesn’t happen very often. That being said because the spools sit on the rollers on the bottom of the S4 all the weight of the filament itself causes more friction. If I put the AMS inside it will solve the issue because the filament spool will be hold by the center of it definitely reducing the friction easing the pull force on the feeder. So crossed🤞🏽.
Let’s keep chatting and I will update you on how it’s going.
While I’m still researching a good storage + dryer solution, I’ll probably end up buying the S4 and use this awesome mod in combination: (seems like I can’t yet include links, search for Ultimate Filament Spool Enclosure 封箱 for AMS Lite by Supergrapher - MakerWorld
So the workflow would be: dry using S4 → store in airtight boxes/bags → when printing place rolls in that enclosure. Best part is that this enclosure also works when using the top mount for the A1.
You can pull straight from a dryer. I’ve done it with the Solvol SH01 (two spool dryer). I got the idea from a post I saw somewhere that I am actually trying to find again, which is how I stumbled on this chat. He had diassembled the AMS Lite and just mounted the guts containing the motors to the top rail and then pulls from 2 SH01’s. It works, because the AMS Lite pulls the filament, so you could technically mount the spools to anything or pull form inside anything as far as I can tell. I have 2 Sunlu S4’s as well (they’re great!), and I was thinking of either pulling from one of those, or the SH01’s. The key though is that you have to minimize any sharp angles. I can post the link to that solution I mentioned when I find it again.
Hey ! Are you still using the S4 on this format ? I’ve being trying to keep my S4 Under the table as you did, but having problems because the printer seems that is not strong enough to pull the filament, o e em printed a mod to use the ams spool holder inside of S4 in order to hold it by the center but without luck
Let me know if you did something else to solve the problem, thank you !
So Fabio, I encountered the same problem when the filaments are new and heavy. The reason behind this is that the friction between the filament and the bearings is high when the filament is new and heavy. I’m working on a new project where I’m going to put the AMS Lite inside the Sunlu S4 resulting in less friction because the filaments will be held by the center of the wheel instead of the weight of the bearings. And by doing this it will still be possible to use the AMS Lite function to rewind the filament as well.
P.S. the white one is awesome. Super cool.
Hey ! Take a look on the project named as “ A1/A1MINI Bambu Lab AMS Lite Swivel Axis Ultimate Edition with S4 Dryer” on the MakerWorld comunity, I printed it, it holds the spool by the center, using the ams spool holder, it reduces the friction, but somethimes I still have the problem to load the filament and stops the print proccess
The white version is so nice, unfortunatelly here in Brazil just the black version is being sold
I would love more info on this!
