Support for PLA/PETG Warning Message

A while back I bought the dedicated product “Support for ABS” and have been very pleased with how well it works. Because I was so satisfied with the particular purpose made filament I bought a spool of “Support for PLA/PETG”. This stuff.

I have loaded it in a slot, imported a model, enable supports and painted the area needing support. I am getting the below message and the link takes me to a wiki page about using PLA to support the PETG. I suspect that is dated and does not reflect a dedicated support interface material. Searched the wiki to no avail. There may be something I’ve missed but this is as much about the Studio slicer not getting the message the RFID is sending.

I can also say that while there may be PLA in that filament, it is definitely NOT PLA. Just loading the AMS feeder is enough to feel and see the difference.

Any thoughts?

I always get the same warning when using that support filament with PETG. Now I just ignore it. I guess I’d call it a slicer bug. Yea if it was PLA it would probably stick to PLA, so I’m not sure what it is going on about. There are no “support” filament types in the system at all (eg. when adding a new filament) so maybe that’s the issue and “PLA” is the closest in terms of print settings. :person_shrugging:

I have two different types of support filaments, depending on what the model is to be made of. The name of each. Bambu sells 4 different support filaments. I did what @maxthreed suggested and ignored it, which is what was going to be my plan already.

The support filament materials main feature is that it will not stick, or only weakly stick to (in my case here) to the PETG. They have a RFID that identifies them as what they are.

  • Support for ABS
  • Support for PLA/PETG

The stuff works great. I know lots of people go through a lot of effort to not use supports but I would recommend it to anyone. Because it is only ever 1 layer thick, a spool can last for years probably. I have the two materials in the green squares.

I think the behavior is a bug, and am going to write it up as one but want to make sure there is not something going on I was unaware of. Seems like the Support for PLA/PETG came out after Support for ABS but before Support of PLA (New Version).

AMS RFID Detects them correctly

Only thing that may effect this is if you are running an old version of Studio? But just worth noting.

This is message when I use ABS and Support for ABS as my printing media.

You’re right, the AMS/printer itself seems to name the filament type properly. What I meant, and just re-verified, in Studio itself there’s no apparent distinction for support type filaments. Or more specifically, the “Support for PLA/PETG” filament profile inherits from (starts with) the basic PLA profile, and to the slicer it appears to be a “PLA” type. So then it throws that minor fit because normally mixing PLA with PETG may require special attention (it also does this when one wants to use plain PLA for PETG interface or vice versa). In contrast, the “Support for ABS” filament type inherits from the base ABS filament profile, so to the slicer it’s just another ABS filament (hence no complaining).

If you’re curious where I’m finding the inheritance stuff, it’s directly in the JSON filament profiles installed in the Studio configuration data folder → system → BBL → filament. For example from Bambu Support For PLA-PETG @base.json

    "inherits": "fdm_filament_pla",

Which uses the file named fdm_filament_pla.json in the same folder for the base settings, only overriding some options. Then there are more specific profiles for each printer and (in many cass) per nozzle size, each inheriting from the more general configs.

It is getting late here so will dig into this in the next day or two. I printed a PETG model last night and removed the supports earlier today. Came of cleanly but it required some muscle to get it started. some of that was the nature of the place that needed support. Filament is definitely not PLA. Too supple.

Running another print with the support filament tweaked but it won’t be done until probably 2 AM so will be interesting to see how it turns out.I’m also wondering if they didn’t just load just a stock PLA code on the RFID .

I noticed at the store the now have a dedicated Support for PLA filament and wonder if they are just trying to consume the inventory of this stuff and then will roll out a better Support for PETG (only) filament. I put in a ticket calling it a bug over on Github after I posted this question on the forum.

BL has turned out some filaments I have not been impressed with such as the PETG HF which is now discontinued. That stuff is what prompted me to quit using PETG for a while.

Not a fan of TPU for AMS either.

So some of this it is hard to know what they are doing
