Support for printing an oloid shape

I’m trying to slice an oloid shape, which has only line or point contact with the build plate no matter how it’s oriented. When I let the program place the support, it only uses a single line or point contact support, which is entirely inadequate. How can I get the program to add more adequate support?

I don’t have my printer yet, but I’m, trying to learn how to use the slicer now, before the printer arrives.

  • Add a dummy cube to your group to make it possible…
  • …to raise your actual object significantly to make room for support.
  • Then paint in the support by hand.

Thanks for the reply, most helpful. I’m just learning how to work with the software.

I would split it in half down the middle and print in two parts with the parting surfaces face down on the build plate. No supports required, much better print quality achievable, except you’ll have to glue it together and maybe do a little finish sanding along the seam before you’d be done…

Given the angle at which it’s set in your slicer, it actually does not need support as all angles are above 45º.

The thing is as you said, the contact is one point and at best a line so even with a brim it will fall.

Best way is to orient it a bit on its side and then support will be generated. I noticed supports are set to manual, orient it, set support to auto and slice

This will be a challenging one to print cleanly. I think you should use it as a case study to cut in half and glue/connect together, vs what can be done with overhangs+supports. aka: do both
