I’ve been experimenting with trying to print stacked gridfinity base plates. These plates are a grid of square cells with walls that start about 5 mm thick at the base and taper down to 1mm or so at the top. The entire grid is only about 5 mm tall. The angle of the taper is well within a no-support print angle.
By inverting every other base plate, it should be possible to stack a bunch of them vertically, and people have done this. Some leave a 0.2mm gap, others put a layer of support material (e.g. PETG for a PLA print). I was working on something to generate stacks doing the latter, but ran into many other problems.
It occurs to me the slicer should be really good at generating this support material itself, if it could be told to just make a thin support layer that’s just the size of the mating faces. Given that the taper angle is shallow enough to be excluded, you’d think the support it builds would be just the flat top or bottom of the grid, straight down to the object below it.
If only there was a “between objects only” feature, sort of the inverse of the “build plate only” setting for supports.
