Ok, so I have NOT updated Bambu Studio or Orca since I’m seeing lots of bugs being reported. This means I’m running BS version 1.8.4.51 and Orca 2.0.0
I’m running into an issue with supports on a model I’ve printed hundreds of times. None of my settings have changed but what I’m running into is supports that used to pretty much just pop out and now so strongly bonded to the model that I can’t remove them at all. I’ve not changed filaments, using the same stuff (Elegoo PLA Plus) that I’ve used on this particular model pretty much since the start. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Well… without an image of your sliced model, it’s hard to conceptualize what your running into. A screengrab with a zoom into the joining area would help.
In the meantime, I can share with you one item that works well for me. Change this parameter to 1.35. That will give you more space to clear the support.
If you use the handy app you can reprint a version of the model that you sent previously then the supports didn’t have issues. If you don’t use the cloud then perhaps you have a sliced file that you know works? This would tell you if you have a slicing issue or some other issue outside of slicing.
Where it’s sticking is at the top and bottom of the slots, would adjusting the xy distance help that? I’d think that’d be the Z offset wouldn’t it?
I’ll look and see if I can find one that came out clean and try re sending that. Gotta love running a 13hr print just to throw away the end product lol
Is your normal work flow to reslice the model every time you reprint the item? Just a suggestion. Once you have a model sliced and printing to your liking, export the gcode (also save multiple backups) and use the same sliced gcode file whenever you need to reprint an item. This isolates you from any slicer changes or bugs.
Unfortunately, each version has customized text (nowhere near the supported areas) so reusing the gcode isn’t an option since I have to modify the text each time.
I hear you on that. It sucks when you send something to print overnight and come back to a mess.
I can’s see anything that jumps out at me. However, I do recall that there was a change in Orca and Studio around the Orca 1.8 release. I’m using 2.1 Beta right now so I can’t go back easily and verify my faulty memory but if I remember correctly, they did make tweaks to the support defaults.
Here’s what I’d recommend. This example is using Studio 1.8 so it should match what you see. Orca 2.1 beta has even more features.

Cut out a section of the model using the cut tool that’s giving you trouble so that you can experiment without wasting filament and also it gives you the opportunity to try multiple experiments on one plate as you can just clone the model and change the settings in the object menu.

I would look at the following parameters. I had to do this for a tricky build I once had. It took several tries. The goal here is to try to create a support structure that is a condensed box on the inside and a lose connection on the tops, bottom and side. By making it tight in the middle, it will be easier to break off in one pieces. Here are three changes that I found sometimes help.

Use a smaller Base pattern spacing. Honeycomb also works well. This creates a denser support that comes off in one piece. You will have to experiment.

Increase the top layers. 3 is the maximum you can go. This will give you more breakaway path and make the strength between the interface layer and the support want to come off in one piece.

Using a combination of Concentric interface pattern and increasing the spacing will also give you more of a breakaway interface.
Note that this is not an easy combination to figure out. If you create too large a interface spacing, you might see sagging in the model. Too little spacing and it’s harder to break away. 0.5 is the default.
Now the reason why I suggested cutting the model into the troublesome part is because it will allow you to make multiple experiments on one plate. So if the overhead for doing one print is 5 minutes and you try five experiments as separate prints. That’s over 20 minutes of unnecessary excess setup/purge time.
Yup, that would be a reason to have to reslice.
Thank you!!! I did as you suggested with the little section and got what I thought would work on the first shot, using the settings you showed. Went ahead and tried it on the full model. It does add about 2 1/2hrs to the print time, and uses a bit more filament, but, the supports popped out with zero fuss or trouble this morning! What used to take me a half hour or so took about 2 minutes! Thanks so much!!
