Suppress cutting of filament

Is there a way to suppress the cutting of the filament when using an external filament without AMS? I would like to protect the cutting module when using reinforced filament.

As far as I have experienced, it doesn’t automatically cut the filament when using and external spool.

After using the external spool I have to tell it to “unload” the filament if I want to go back to using the AMS. So, most of the time I just leave the external loaded to print multiple plates and not worry about switching.

In my case it could be that i have to switch every print. If i press unload at the external spool it always cuts the filament.

Pretty sure that the cutting of the filament is just standard operating procedures for when you unload the tool head. I always cringe when the printer has to cut some PPA-CF, that stuff is super tough. I bought a couple extra cutters just in case. I haven’t had to replace one yet or have any reason to believe they are close to wearing out.

It is, but what I was saying is that when you use the external spool it doesn’t automatically unload the filament. It can’t because you have to manually pull it out. So, it does NOT automatically cut at the end of the print.

Yes but user_3313719145 stated they need to change filament after every print. During unload the filament is cut and I do not think there is a way around that.

Yeah, I am not sure how you would change the filament every time without cutting? Are you wanting to do a manual cold-pull and cutting it yourself each time?

I was simply pointing out that it does not automatically cut after the print, like it does with the AMS.

As others have said it will not cut the filament from external (non-AMS) source unless you press “unload” buttons. Also I print a lot of CF filament and the blade is not something you need to worry about. In 10k hours I only had to replace one blade and they are also very cheap.

you can also just heat up the nozzle manually and then use the extruder control to retract the filament. Or do I miss something here? You even have to purge less filament when loading the next spool.

If you do that eventually you will get an extruder clog, there is a reason a cutter is used. Pulling semi-molten soft filament through the extruder gears is asking for trouble.

Well my Creality K1C has no filament cutter and it ejects filament just fine without it. Infact I have almost no issues with that printer and filament handling apart from TPU.

Others use ramming and retract instead of cutting. Tradeoffs for both approaches.

Cutters are wear parts, end of the day, so really don’t try THAT hard to protect them :slight_smile:

Ok i see, i think the cutting is the best approach here. I just thought the cutting is not working propperly with the reinforced filaments. If the only drawback is the wear of the cutter than cutting is the best option i think.
