I’m sure some of you have experienced this phenomenon yourselves and can tell me what the cause might be
The ABS filament has been thoroughly dried, and the surface defect appears only in the sector of the cylinder marked in the top view. I’ve also manually calibrated the flow dynamics and flow rate — the calibration prints look perfect.
I can reproduce the same issue with PLA. According to the Wiki, I checked and cleaned the nozzle tip. After cleaning, the issue with PLA prints was almost completely gone, but with ABS there was hardly any improvement.
What are your thoughts on this?
No, the seam is located on the back side of the cylinder and is therefore not visible in the photo. Reducing the printing speed for the outer walls might be a good workaround. However, I’ve printed many similar cylindrical parts with the same filament before, without any surface defects.
If the problem persisted between abs into pla, try replacing your nozzle. That one’s aperture might be damaged on the side all the strange curls are showing on, etc.
Also, first line of defense, Slice the object and look at the various previews just to make sure those are not present in the plan
That’s a really clever thought, Bullocks — one wouldn’t come up with that right away. But of course, it makes perfect sense that during a fast circular movement of the hotend, the molten material is affected by centrifugal force, and exactly in the affected sector the nozzle might have a small defect, which in turn causes the surface issue. Many thanks for that smart observation!
By the way, I had actually replaced the nozzle independently of your post — and sure enough, the problem disappeared. I swapped the 0.6 mm nozzle for a 0.4 mm one, although I don’t think the diameter change itself made the difference.
Your second tip is also a really good piece of advice. After a few failed prints, I realized that I could have spotted the issues beforehand if I had just examined the slicing preview more carefully.
