Text as separate objects height not being enforced

I made a post a few months ago about being annoyed that you can’t set the thickness (in layers) of text that you added within BS, i.e. even if you made the text 0.4mm deep and were using 0.2mm layers, (so 2 layers of text) it would still make the text 4 or 5 layers (1mm) deep (or more sometimes, for no apparent reason), causing a bunch of unnecessary filament changes.

I am now on to doing multi color TPU parts with manual filament changes, and I really want to get the change numbers down.

I thought that doing it the old/right way of making the text separate bodies or components in CAD before even loading the file into BS would make the text the exact thickness wanted, since BC just sees the text as another object it needs to print, but, just like with the BS text tool, it’s adding more layers still.

Example, I have a round coaster 1mm thick. In Fusion 360, I made the embedded text a separate body, 0.36mm thick (.2mm initial layer plus one 0.16mm layer, so 2 layers total). I set the text object to the different color in BS and slice, yet it still is doing the text color for 5 layers, which I’m not sure how even is possible since the text object BS sees is only 2 layers high, so I don’t know where it’s even generating the other 3 layers of toolhead movement for the text from.

Not sure if it’s something I’m doing wrong or is it just how BS works?

Tough one, i’m not familiar with the fine details here but a few thoughts:

  1. Did you try paint by height? Instead of setting the entire text object to the new color paint it with height of 0.36, maybe that helps somehow? Also, is ‘bottom shell layers’ possibly getting involved? Since the text is a different object you can probably easily test this, though it doesn’t make much sense, I wouldn’t expect the software to extend a body to that doesn’t meet that requirement, but perhaps if it is contained in side another body.

  2. Export as .step, this is the highest resolution you will get out of fusion afaik.

I always use .step files, thank you for bringing up bottom shell layers, I did not even think to try setting that separately, when I set it to 2 layers for the text object, it only does 2 layers of color.

What a guess! Glad you got it solved!

I remember when using the text feature within BS that was one of the things I tried, and it doesn’t work, so I guess my brain just assumed it didn’t work with external objects, either.
