Text on bottom of layer is printed poorly

I am trying to print a model from maker world which has text on the bottom layer. Filament used is SUNLU Matte PLA. The problem is: Most times the smallest parts of the text don’t stick to the plate (which was cleaned before!). Sometimes even the later layers somehow start to “point upwards” on some corners of the text, if you understand what I mean. For example the small “dots” inside the capital B or P… Sometimes even the whole letters get ripped of the plate during print. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong here… I already tried slowing down the printer, but it didn’t help. Filament is calibrated. Model is Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era Insert - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld , Plates 10 and 11. Those are lids for trays and have a text on their bottom layer, which will be the top surface when in use. Any suggestions?

I took this file, did nothing, and sliced it. On a 0.4mm nozzle, A1.

Based on this, I agree that some of the very small minutiae of text will be unreadable or get a little mangled.

If you reslice with a 0.2mm nozzle, however…. the outline looks much more possible but there’s also just a lot of chaff being produced in those text reliefs…

Zooming in, the model itself has some odd artifacts within the text that I am sure are making the slicer get really desperate

Just checking, are you using a smooth plate as recommended by the designer? That black printer plate? Or are you using the bronze-colored textured plate? The extremely small font is quite demanding for the printing plate in terms of adhesion.

By the way, you can also upload pictures here once you have completed the short tutorial in the forum and confirmed the rules, which takes less than 5 minutes.

I am sorry, I totally forgot printer info. Still quite new to this hobby… I have a P1S with the 0,4 nozzle. And no, I don’t have tried the smooth plate, didn’t see that recommendation (where?), but I did try my new Panda Frostbite Plate with the “Cold Plate/PLA Plate” setting (don’t know if this is the correct one?). Didn’t help it though…

What I did now is using the Lid without text and added text myself with the Bambu Studio Texttool. Chose a bigger font and made it bold, also I added it as modifier and chose a color (black) for the text so it is flush with the lid and better readable. This improved the text a lot, but only if if prints the text first for some reason… If I choose the order white base → black text, I get the same problems.

I took another close look at the model, and the main problem is that the font is completely unsuitable for 3D printing. The good reviews don’t refer to all parts either; many people have only printed the dice / chips tray, for example.

You can see it quite clearly here: the A, B, and R only have tiny little filament blobs in the middle. It may look big in my photo, but when printed out, it’s just a tiny blob that barely sticks. The font should be much larger, and I mean significantly larger, as well as optimized for 3D printing and, above all, for a 0.4 nozzle.

Here is a comparison of a test print showing how the 0.4 nozzle reaches its limits when printing text.

Of course, other factors can also play a role, such as settings, whether the filament is dry, etc. But I think that since this is the first model the creator has uploaded, he simply doesn’t have much experience yet in optimizing text for 3D printing.

If you can customize the font, then drag it over the entire object. There’s no reason to make it so tiny. I would also use a font that is more suitable for 3D printing. You have a large area, use it. This is not a competition to see how small you can make the font. :grin: :+1:

Thank you so much for this deep review. Means a lot! I was getting really frustrated, now I know it’s not really me who’s doing something wrong… Thats why I chose to use the font-less lid to be able to use my own font via Texttool. I chose Trajan Pro font and made it bigger and bold. Which fonts are “optimized for 3d printing”? Is there some kind of indicator?

I know I have a large area, but I’d like to use the same font-size for every lid, and some have really long text, where I can’t use the same font-size.

Here are a few examples of fonts that are good:

  • Arial - should have every Windows installed
  • ROG Fonts
  • “Bahnschrift” - Font for train and road signage
