Text on Bottom of Model

Putting text on to the bottom of a part (on build plate), in Bambu Studio 2.1.1.52 and for the last few updates, is most of the time, impossible to control. In the past, when I wanted text on the build plate side of a part I would just set the text thickness to .02 and the depth at .6 or .4 when using .2mm layer height. Now, it is nearly impossible to get the text to be accurately placed on the bottom. Does Bambu Lab not want us to do this? It just seems like the current version of the software is working against me for some reason. Most of the time it will not let me put the text on the bottom while editing. To do it, you need to create the text somewhere else and then move it to the bottom. Now, this method really does not work either. Also, it would be nice to be able to change the color of the text while you are editing. It defaults to the same color as the background making it hard to read.

I am seeing something similar, that is the response to the thickness and embedded dimensions seems “off” when placing text on the bottom of a part. I am placing the text as a “modifier” in the text dialog

Near as i can determine, the two dimensions are being treated as additive in the direction away from the build plate. Whereas in the past the thickness dimension was always treated as “away from the part surface”( i.e. thru the build plate for a bottom surface text), whilst embedded was “into the part body”.

Knowing that, i can place the text OK, but it does seem an undocumented or unintentional change to the placement algorithm.

Is anyone from Bambu Lab reading these posts? Do they know that you cannot put text on the bottom of a model in the current version 2.2.0.85 ?? For me, this is the most common modification that I make to any print, put a name on the model somewhere. Most often, the best place to put it is on the flat surface of the bottom. In the past, to make this happen, I would just add text to a model anywhere and then move the text to the bottom. OR, in some previous versions, I could set a height of .02mm and a depth of .6mm, position the text on the bottom, and it would work fine. BUT, for some reason, this latest software auto-changes the .02mm to .10mm and then it just does not work. While editing, it looks like everything is perfect. When you slice the file, the text is gone. Color does not matter, size does not matter, the text elements will just not be there after slicing. If you put two different objects of different colors in the same space, the software kind of merges the colors into a checkerboard pattern that looks really bad.
So, the ONLY way to get clean text on the bottom of a part that I know of now is to:

  1. Build the text as a separate object the color you want it to to be
  2. Put it where you want it to relative to the other models. Rotating, mirror,…)
  3. Position it where you want it to be
  4. Make a copy of the text object (cntl C, cntl V),
  5. Merge ONE of the copies of the text to the object/model that you want it on
  6. Change it to a Negative Part. (Right click menu)
  7. Then slice the file and print.
    Only after doing all this will it actually show up as you see it on the screen. Ignore the error box that says parts are crashing into each other, slice and print.
    Bambu Lab, PLEASE fix this to just work as edited.!!!

If you choose “Modifier” down the at the bottom as the Operation, you will be able to print text on the bottom that is flush with the rest of the model.

Funny i’ve just encountered this situation… I’ve typically always avoided this issue or method within Bambu Studio by using OrcaSlicer or simply modeling the text within CAD as an individual component which in slicer translates the (2) seperate bodies allowing them to be printed together.

I tried exactly what you were mentioning by adding simple text to the bottom face and have it in a different color. In my instance I only wanted (2) colors but no matter what operation I selected the letters would change the entire body to the same color regardless if the text was black or silver and would swap if I changed it… super frustrating and a time waster for sure.

Theoretically when you have individual bodies/components you should be able to select the color for each and combine them together which should still be treated as such. The bug is when the entire model is converting towards (1) color versus multiple regardless of being merged or modified.

I have a P1S without an AMS. The method I use is as follows:

Recessed text same color as the rest of the model.

  1. Have my model placed on the build plates in BS.
  2. Rotate the view to the bottom view.
  3. Select the model
  4. Select the text tool
  5. Input my text and moved the cursor to the bottom of the part. The text will show up after a short delay.
  6. For recessed textI set the thickness to 0.5mm
  7. Click to place my text on the bottom.
  8. Use the movement tool to precisely locate the text.
  9. Select the text under the objects tab, right click and select ‘Negative part’
  10. Slice

For flush text in a different color.

Repeat steps 1 - 5 above.

  1. Set my text thickness to twice the layer height I am using. This is because I do not have an AMS and want to minimize manual filament swaps.
  2. Set the text recess distance to the same as the thickness.

Follow steps 7 - 10 above.

When printing I watch for the head to move to the purge tower and pause the print to swap colors. After it prints the two layers of text and returns to the purge tower, I pause and swap colors back.

After a little experimentation and comparing older print profiles, it seems to me that there used to not be the options of part, cut, or modifier but rather previously only used the modifier option. Yet in the current version of Bambu Lab, part is the default option. Thus, if one was to expect the old default, they could become confused. This brings up the possibility that older print profiles using text generated in older versions of Bambu Lab may no longer work as expected - giving users a functional upgrade warning.

Ideally the text height should be 0 in order to be flush with the bottom surface, or any surface for that matter. However the minimum acceptable value is 0.1 mm which washes out in the rounding errors, making it the same as if it were 0.

In any case I tend to prefer to create text in my CAD software where I have better control.

In my case doesn’t work nothing because i paint the model, and paint seem’s to change all the fist layer at same color and ignore the shape of the text and color text.

For work i need to avoid paint the 3 first layers and make this model in the color i want for the base (bad thing in my model).

I was having the exact same issue today. In where I was adding text on the bottom, painting either the text, or painting the bottom, but leaving the text the same color as the object (so the text ‘pops’). Then when I went to slice, the entire bottom was gone, without text. However, I’m not using a dual nozzle machine. I’m using the Carbon X1C.

In any case,

  • I added the text on the bottom of my print. I made it to be a “part” (not negative part). I kept the depth at 0 but it would auto go to 0.10 and embed to 0. But do play around with it.
  • Made either a group, or Mesh Booleen’ed the object and text.
  • Click on the object and go to “Paint”
  • On paint, make sure “edge detection” is on!!! I had it on connected same color
  • Slice

To recap, I tried playing with my print within the paint settings by turning on “connected same color,” - didn’t work, then turn on “edge detection.” and I was able to make it work once I slice.

Note* I did follow blchandl2’s instructions and it did work! but it was recessed ever so slightly, and the bottom color sort of bled into the text. But it was a quick fix.

Why not just use the text as modifier and choose another color for the text_shape?

I am newer to 3D printing and I have been trying to work through this issue as well. So far I have found that I can simply add text to the bottom of an object originated from Bambu Slicer, like a block and it will print. When I try and add text to the bottom of an Object file (obj) exported from TinkerCad, it does not print. When I export that same project as an STL file, then add the text to the bottom of the object, it does print.

I am adding the text in Bambu Slicer because I have more font options compared to TinkerCad. I like to export the project as an obj file because i can set the colors without having to paint them. There may be a better way to do this but as I mentioned, I am newer to 3D printing and TinkerCad is the first application I have used to created prints.

so i figured it out on accident. you have to flip the model over to the bottom of the plate and then click the object from the bottom side. this tells it to put it on that side remember to change to color to a color that shows. it not invisible its just not a color that shows(black on black-has to be white on black).
