The Gold Rush is over - Point system is dead

The search tool gives better results on printables that for sure.
And I think it’s not only because printables has a bigger database.
But how MW matches the search terms with the model. And the combinaison of chinese and English content doesn’t help either.

I think the translation got to you. But on a side note I have noticed more Chinese models/designers showing up but I don’t might that I mean its “Maker-WORLD”… I do see though the largest part of the term “beta” to MW is the search algorithms. We need a push in refined categories, model organization, featured models (I see the same thing & people everyday, week, month) 30 day trending (not even sure what this means as I’ve seen models not even loaded 30 days…) lots of refinement are in order and this is why it’s a beta.

Maker World means the whole planet.

The World Series means just the USA & Canada.

World means very different things to different cultures.

Yep. I didn’t know it was with a T in English. We are learning every day ^^ thanks for pointing this out to me

Well, I mean, frankly, I am bummed, and would be more bummed. The rewards program is awesome. It’s nicer than what Printables has. Right now I’m just trying to save what points I can for the hope later in the year I can get whatever new flagship printer they might release. I wont be able to afford it out of pocket otherwise; my first few purchases came as one of those once every 5 year flukes. I would have struggled to afford filament throughout the year so far. I put those rewards to extensive use.

So yeah, I mean, it wouldn’t just be like oh well. Those rewards have funded a lot of my more recent designs. They allowed me to dive so feverishly in.

It wouldn’t be the end of my world though. The first thing I ever released on thingiverse was posted in 2015! I’ve been impassioned with 3d printing for a long time. There’s a lot of things I still want to create, and it’s my own whims and desires that push that.

Of course we will. I mean, I haven’t been on Makerworld from the start. I built myself up on here and found my voice on Makerworld. I’ve seen others completely knock it out of the park, in terms of making a splash on the Makerworld scene. I feel like I’m brute forcing my way to some sort of standing. I’m not so good with the trendy stuff, so I’m just stubbornly trying to make solid models. The bread and butter of the dinner table. Everyone comes for the main course, but it wouldn’t be a complete meal without a dinner roll. Something like that anyway.

Hahahaha. Not sure how realistic that is. My ability to keep creating in this arena at a sustained rate goes hand in hand with my ability to make money with which I can support myself; otherwise I should be doing more lucrative things. Makerworld’s rewards/points isn’t money for me, as it can’t be used to purchase food or pay electricity. I’ve been trying to work to establish a full enough catalog that it’s desirable to license, but it’s still an uphill climb as I’m still not super popular or well known. I mean, I just managed to re-establish an Instagram account. I’m awful at marketing though and social media, so.

Yup

I found a super awesome crawler crane model on cults3d that I just got, and am starting to 3d print. I was thinking about with all the talk about how to get boost, and interacting on Makerworld, and all of that. There’s a lot Makerworld still doesn’t have though. My biggest project outside of my own things is something I couldn’t even get on Makerworld even if I wanted to.

You know though, @ProtoSpyre. I still feel like a second rate wanna be designer, wishing he could be noticed by the world. I feel uncomfortable talking about my popularity because it feels well undeserved. I have a level of anxiety with everything I release, that somehow it’s all trash and people are suddenly gonna realize and revolt against me. These months on Makerworld have been a wild ride of emotion coming off the back of a year that completely broke me. I don’t know how to respond to most of it. I don’t know how to deal with it all. The comments, the boost, the negative reviews, everything. It’s so much and it overwhelms me. I feel so bad, like I’m not doing enough to respond to people, or thank them, or that I’m not doing enough to show my appreciation. Despite even all the downloads and likes, I still struggle too a lot feeling like, do I even belong?

The rewards system with the new rules is still vastly superior to printables IMHO. Especially if you are not in the EU.

I wonder if people on the Printables forum are complaining that they are unjustly compensated for their designs and that people can download them without being logged in.

No I don’t think they are complaining about the rewards.
The only complain I have about printables/prusa is the shipping cost and their ASA spools are out of stock since months.

But at least on printables “unlogged” download are counted.

Depends on. Let’s say you have a design that has already been downloaded more than 1000 times. It now receives 500 downloads per month. At printables you get 360 Prusameters, which can be exchanged for 1 spool of filament.
As is well known, Makerworld will not count all 500 downloads, but - roughly estimated - only 200 of them, which earns you 60 points or 4.60 Euros. What’s better now?

I didn’t do the math with the recent change of rules. So I won’t speak about the worth of 1 download.

But only those facts make it vastly superior :

  • you can cumulate coupons ( not on printables)
  • have a 1 year validity (3 months on printables)
  • you can buy everything on the store with the 40€ coupons
  • bbl offer free shipping over 50€ order (no free shipping and it cost at minimum 12,50€ and I’m in Belgium, 1000km from the prusa warehouse).
  • bbl is wayyyyy faster to deliver coupons (up to 2 weeks on printables), prepare (three days with prusa, 1-2 days with bbl) and ship it .

And if you’re outside the EU, on printables the shipping is obviously more expensive and you need to add import taxes and wait even longer to receive your package.
Where bbl has local warehouse all over the world.

So yeah the user experience far far superior with bbl.

Those designers move on to the “store” and sell their models…

For people removing or threatening to remove their models from MakerWorld, is it just in defiance of their changes, or would you not have not posted your models on MakerWorld if they started with their current reward system? And if it is the second choice, are you currently posting your models on any sites that offer fewer rewards than MakerWorld?

Also, what is the downside of posting your models on multiple sites and getting whatever rewards you can get on each of them? I figured that would be my approach when I start posting my models, unless one of them offered me something worthwhile to keep it exclusive to them.

I took a look at your top models and to have used 580 rolls for your top 4 models seems like bad planning and design and extremely wasteful . I don’t think it is a reasonable expenditure based on what you made, you should consider spending more time in CAD and less time printing.

I think you misunderstood.

The 580 roll quantity is probably from the sum of download/prints * by the amount of filament in each print.

That’s like Sony expecting the power companies to compensate them because PS5 users spent millions of hours playing last year.

With all that money the power companies have made off PS5 users, Sony deserves a cut, right?

And you can’t play a PS5 without a TV… Samsungs in for a payday!

  Ok, that sounds more reasonable.

Your analogy is a bit off. I would compare it more to Spotify. They pay the artists to upload their music to the site. But if they decide to slash their rates to artists, artist will no longer upload to their site.

Actually, it is a bit different than that.

It is like a hardware store buying a hammer wholesale and selling it retail. They paid a cost but made the money back when they sold it.

Now they are expecting the hammer manufacture to keep supplying them with hammers but for free, so they can keep all the sales as profit.

There is no agreement to pay you to upload when you sign up on MakerWorld. You willingly upload your models for free. That’s not going to change.

If you want to get paid, upload to Patreon, Cults3D or Printables store.

EDIT: Absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to get paid either.
