The parametric model generated via Customize has incorrect print parameters

Well, I have already described this problem in another older thread, but I am afraid it is a little “lost” there, as there has been no response to it yet, so I took a liberty to repeat it here - in a new, separate thread.

The problem in brief: the Parametric model (Fusion) generated via the Customize function has an incorrect print parameters.

In more detail: I have a model (flexi filament clip) that was created in Fusion. My recommended filament for it is PETG or ASA. PLA is unsuitable. With regard to the material, the model has some parameters for printing that I recommend. Among other things like Walls, Sparse Infill, and then the recommended (lower) print speeds.

The model has a normal “fix” Main Print profile on its page, which contains one piece of the clip (in one given size) and, most importantly, all the print parameters that I consider optimal. … so far, so good

In addition to the mentioned normal print profile, there is also a Customize function that allows user to generate a clip in the particular size. For this parametric generation, an f3d (export from “Fusion”) file was added to the model.

When I generate a clip using the Customize function, it generates correctly (size, etc. are all OK), but when I then download the generated model in a 3MF file, the print parameters are completely “off” – it basically ignores my settings (as I set them in the main/first print profile). Instead, it looks (at least to me) like everything is set to some default values

  • The material is set to PLA only = which is wrong & moreover other filaments are completely missing
  • The walls and infill values are off = set to some default
  • Speeds are also set to default (higher=> not ideal for the given model and recommended PETG)
  • etc.

Basically, the only thing “left” of my model is the (correctly) generated STL “base”… the rest was added (at least that’s how it seems to me) by MakerWorld itself according to some default values, completely ignoring my settings. Which is definitely not good…

So either I overlooked/misunderstood something (in which case, please point me in the right direction), or this is “how it’s supposed to be,” but in that case, it’s quite unfortunate - this is my first parametric model published in real life, and I had been under the impression that the parameter settings would be taken from the Main Print Profile (as I haven’t found any other option to define my desired parameters - so that the Customize function would import them from there).

  • Currently, I am addressing this issue by including a note about this “error” in the description + instructions on how to import the correct print parameters from the Main Profile into the generated 3MF profile. However, I do not consider this to be ideal. For a beginner user, it’s unnecessarily complicated, and more importantly, I assume that a lot of “Handy app” people will just ignore it and print downloaded 3MF profile as it is (assuming it’s OK) - i.e., print it incorrectly - and then complain that something went wrong and the model is “c*r*a*p” (which is notat least not for this specific reason :slight_smile: )

I know there are many experienced people here who have parametric models, and I’m sure someone has already encountered a similar problem and knows how to solve it. For now, I assume that I’ve just overlooked something and there is a way to have a parametric model from Fusion so that the generated 3MF file has the print parameters that the author wants. I just need some advice on how to do it :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I don’t want to look like someone who is artificially increasing traffic to the model by complaining about a “problem”, but if anyone needs/wants to try what I’m describing, here’s the link (otherwise please feel free to ignore it)

The parameters are correct in the main print profile, but after generating via Customize and downloading the 3MF file, they will be wrong.

I have no experience with parametric fusion 360 models, but I do have with openscad models.
Profiles are completly independent from the parametric model, and they will no inherit any configuration parameter.

You can edit some of the parameters of the script, by clicking in the generator preview during the upload (or editing) process. The generator will popup and you can modify the parameters by selecting the plate:

I’m looking forward for this to be improved - in the settings one is limited to a set of print parameters and the list is way too short. Parametric modeling is really powerful, however, in many cases indeed one needs to tweak slicer parameters.

My post doesn’t help much, it’s just a moral support to you :slight_smile:

Guys, thank you for your comments. I searched for the settings mentioned by @migueljeronimoa:

I edited model profile … found something (although it looked a little different) - a table appeared where I could enter/change some parameters such as Generator, Walls, Infill, etc… no filament setting, but at least some parameters could be set …. great …

I then selected Upload and confirmed that the new version would overwrite the old one… so it looked relatively promising… then saved model profile, wait for it to be verified …

… however, when I then tried to generate a clip and download the 3mf profile, it is the same … all profile parameters remained unchanged (at the "wrong” default values (parameters I had set before was ignored/lost).

So either I did something wrong, or it doesn’t work … I don’t know… I’ll try again when I have more time… For now, I’ll just leave a note about the “error” in the model description and instructions on how to import the recommended print settings… hmm…

Maybe someone here will show up who has direct experience with Fusion generation and show me what I’m doing wrong… Anyway, thanks for trying.

OK, update… some news …!!! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

the parameter change works (sort of)… I tried it again and the parameters that I could enter (and did enter) were transferred to the generated profile - they are just not set as Global (everything there is at default values) but are set for the specific generated Object.

This confused me before as I only looked at Global settings, but didn’t check Object …

… so the generator really changed to Arachne, the number of walls and infill (% and type) changed properly … however, what did not change - because it cannot be set - is the printing speed (which is taken from Global) and the type of material-filament.

So that solves about half of my problem, and to be honest, what bothers me the most in this particular case is the speed, which is “beyond my control” and seems too hight for this model and filament (imho) … So it works somehow… and thanks again for the guidance… but it’s definitely not optimal… it’s a shame… it would take so little to make it ideal.

Now my current opinion (but it may change) is : I will probably avoid parametric models in cases where it is not a PLA model, where it doesn’t really matter how it is printed …
