The REAL printable area of H2D

So basically:

The H2D loses about 30 mm of print area because of the toolhead design.
Then, because of engineering issues, “Clumping Detection” was introduced through an update. This further eats into the top of the build plate, and on top of that it requires a mandatory Prime Tower as part of the “solution.”

So did I just pay nearly $3,000 for an extra—what—30 mm of usable space?
In practice, with all these hastily added “fixes,” the effective area drops to around 290 × 280 mm. Wow. And the A1 still has 256 × 256 mm

[Note to self]: Never buy new Bambu Lab printers until they’ve been on the market at least a year, and the “post-mortem” successor models (e.g., H2S after H2D) are released.

You can in fact use single nozzle with one or multiple filaments if you need to print something larger up to 325x320.

And in extreme case where you want to print something even larger in one piece you can load the same filament in both nozzles to get the full 350x320, but you do have to jump though some hoops to do it.

You are correct about the clumping detection but technically speaking prime tower is not mandatory and can be turned off.

We knew all of this when the H2D came out, no surprises here for anyone that bothered to read the spec sheet. If you are just looking for “BIG!” H2S might be the printer for you. For some of us including myself H2D is a much more capable tool.

Just to clarify, a Prime Tower is not required. It’s only needed if you are using multi-color printing or the optional clumping detection. You can actually use the full plate — for now it takes a few tricks, but hopefully Bambu Lab Studio will soon be able to slice a model so that it uses the entire build area, even the parts that the left and right printheads can’t currently reach. At the moment you need to do a bit of manual work, but it is possible.

The only detail you wouldn’t have known in advance is that clumping detection reserves a small portion of the build area, but again, that’s optional.

As for the Prime Tower using up some space, that’s true for every current printer and most likely future ones as well, so no surprises there.

No surprises for those willing to compromise, yes. But not so for all of the users. Can someone tell me of any way to utilise the full (“full”) area of 320x320 at least by any way without compromising in speed? Prime tower aside, they still want us to sacrifice that white colored area (=11 pieces of grid) to alleviate the engineering flaw, thus effectively reducing it to (we are talking square shape only) 320X320 minus the affected row, which is basically 10cm vertically. Still a reduction.

Nozzle clumping detection without the detection area still works, it’s just not flawless. and for me it’s a bshite function Enabling the tapping version of nozzle clumping detection still won’t guarantee you a 100% nozzle clumping prevention. It’s just like all cars nowadays have AEB but you still need to brake by your own when it’s needed.

Afaik it’s not enabled by default in release version of Bambu Studio. Which was requested by the community (to not to enable it by default).

Of course, because it is just their attempts at reducing the numerous cases of clogging caused by bad design of the new hotend system. Should it be working in 100% of cases, they would’ve forced it for sure.

I don’t think they are related (the function and the clogging, they are completely different things). But the clogging issue is real and they need to fix the hotends.

1000+ hours of printing and I’ve never had a clog… Am I just lucky or competent? (snarky joke don’t rage)

The A1 doesn’t need a prime tower on multi filament prints? Then the same applies for the H2D.

Additionally, for simplicity you are reducing the size to the maximum rectangular shape fitting within your drawn limits.

Your conclusions are tweaked in such a way that the H2D looks bad in relation to the A1.
In common language we call that “biased”.

Same here, 1200+ hours and zero hot end clogs. Im 95% of the time on HF nozzles, are you having clogs on standard or HF nozzles? With what filament?

If you print enough PPS CF and PPA CF on the 0.4 nozzle, it would explode due to clogging sooner or later.

I couldn’t care less about multi-color printing. I was misled by the promised print area. My original post is about area per se, not multi-color printing. For sheer large model prints, the measly increase in actual print volume is disappointing.

I mostly print large 3D models (1.5 meters or bigger), so for me, only the square-shaped zone counts. Not everyone prints tabletop figurines on these machines, especially when buying the ‘bigger’ model. You also tweak your answer in a way that makes it seem as if the H2D looks ‘good’ compared to the A1 for users who only print large-scale model, so it works both ways.

Fact #1: Older-generation CoreXY models, such as the X1C, did not have this problem.
Fact #2: Bambu Lab had plenty of time to conduct the necessary QA testing before releasing the H2D.
Fact #3: The current design is faulty.

Therefore, my solution is this: I simply disable all those mumbo-jumbo workarounds, since it is not the user’s fault to lose over 10 cm of working space. If anything happens, I’ll just go the refund route.

You bought a printer designed for multi-material printing and are complaining that you don’t need multi-material printing. The clumping detection is optional, and the rest of the limitations were made clear when reading the spec sheet. Did you just buy it blindly because it was new, did you not watch any reviews?? This printer clearly doesn’t suit your needs, but that in no way makes it “faulty”, you’re just upset about the build plate size, and you only have yourself to blame as that info was easily available. I don’t know about you, but when I spend almost $4K on a tool, I tend to research the product quite well to learn it’s limitations and make sure it suits my needs to a T for such a price.

You want to bring up the X1C in unprintable areas??

sure it didn’t have the left nozzle zone, but since your are finding fault with completely optional H2D features taking up spaces, the X1C came loaded with way more disabled unprintable areas lmao

I don’t even know if you have ever used an X1C then…

In case of single color printing, a purge tower is not required. So the effective area is a lot larger.

You might want to wait for the H2S, which will give some additional real estate in the same external volume.

I had one clog with PETG-CF, but I also print it using a 0.4 HF nozzle :joy:

That clog was easy to clear with cleaning filament.

With TPU, I sometimes get partial clogs, but only between prints—never during a print.

The X1 Carbon has plenty of hidden space eaters, like the filament cutting area and so on. Have you ever even used an X1 Carbon? I own one, and I knew exactly what I was buying. I’ll say it again: know your tools!
