I’m surprised none of the big filament companies sponsor the talented designers like you and Josh on Makersworld (and the other sites). You could mention you use them in each listing and they supply the free filament for the project. They only seem to love Youtubers though. @Josh-3D I just saw you still don’t have the filament order and it hurts my heart. That whole post asking for feedback and they couldn’t be bothered to fix one problem.
Ahh, I’m not too surprised. As neat as that would be. I don’t really have social media presence like that. I wish I did, haha. I’d enjoy having some sponsored projects. I really think a lot about color, material choice. From the start of design, I am usually thinking about filament selection too. The colors and all of that!
They’re working on it, on the lost filament order. They’re processing a replacement order, I believe, but don’t have all the details yet.
Progress on the chess table. Just have the outer section to go!
I kind of wish I printed this out of the PETG-HF they have now. Not sure what colors I would have used. I ordered all the filament for it a minute ago though. Thankfully I even had enough on hand, as I had under estimated how much it was going to take. I used the mattes. 9 rolls of the dark brown, 6 rolls of the latte brown, plus some black and white. 128 screws!
I did a youtube video for my floating chessboard table, since I got it released.
haha, I’m not much of a video guy. Hopefully they aren’t too bad. I’ve been trying to do more of these to show off my work. I feel really dorky in these
This thing is so cool, by the way. I’m so proud. I don’t think people will be busting down the door to print their own, but for me, as a little side art project that carries through a number of ideas I’ve had.
I have found out where all the filament has gone!
333.3 hours to print, I also know why!
Don’t Judge me! You don’t know where I’ve been!
(I’ve been in my room hoarding all the filament, is where I’ve been)
It was crazy printing this up, considering the time and filament. Biggest thing I’ve ever done. It’s weird to have gone through a full stack of rolls of filament like that. I usually feel pretty hesitant because traditionally I’ve been short on resources. Had to talk myself into actually going through with printing it.
Like PBS, this was made possible by the support of 3d printer users like you I’m talking about all of you! Not just Malc.
I’ll get back to some more practical things soon, haha.
my son wants this.
Not sure I’m happy with you over this because I have to print it.
I notice 25 downloads so far, weirdly, no successful prints reported, I think we need to wait a fortnight to see anyone who has completed it.
Wait hold up, do we know each other? I’ve been doing video game art for 21 years this August. I 3D print for the same reason, heh. It’s so nice to make something real that doesn’t rely on someone having the right console to see it. Also, I totally bought all the metal filament so I could make the card shuffler. Bambu, give this man a sponsorship!!
You’re featured on the MakerWorld page now for the chess table. Congrats!
14.6kg!?
Are you f-kidding me?
Yeah, my boy is paying for it.
Star Destroyer was only like 5-6kg.
Really not fond of you right now Josh
A little more, I think. There’s a few plates that need to be printed multiple times
I’m a little excited, scared, surprised, that people have been thinking of taking this project on. I just wanted to do something cool. I get nervous with every project I release, waiting for the first print. It kind of helps to confirm that things went okay. With something as big as this though, it gives me a heart attack to think about. It’s not even the biggest thing I’ve conceptualized.
I think the key is to get all of the filament on a sweet deal. I got all of the rolls for that one during the sale.
It gets me too how much we create as game artist. It’s considered sci-fi, or fantasy; however you want to call it, it often boils down to imagined. We created though, it exist. I don’t know why we don’t bring more of that design sense alive.
Polymaker, if you’re reading this, just know I love your colors too
It would be cool to do some sponsored projects based on certain filaments. Be it the visual quality, or the mechanical properties. I’ve daydreamed a little bit before about things like that.
Yeah, I have to wazit for a sale. I have more than enough but not in the colors I want to do it in, which is the colors you printed it in.
My in-laws have wooden tables just like this. The orientation of the legs allows them to stack easily out of the way when not needed.
Ahh I didn’t even realize that! I like that though. The table is slightly wobbly. Seems to still function fine. I thought about bracing it a little more to try and reduce some of the wobble, but I kind of want to keep it true to form too.
Their wooden ones are very sturdy. Does the wobble come from the connection of the legs to the table? Not sure where else a loose connection could be wobbly with the design.
There’s a few potential spots. One is the leg connection. I’m going to design it a little differently, so the legs index more into an indent. I’m considering switching to machine screws too, with a nut that could be slotted in. Right now I’m using self tapping screws, 20mm ones. I worry though if that’ll be enough. I could probably have a tighter connection through the whole frame if I used machine screws with nuts.
It isn’t too bad. I’ve been using it. I was playing with the cat around it too, and she more or less body slammed it and it survived without a crack!
Blown away! The guy that posted about AI printing. needs a look inside your minds. NO WORRIES.
Calm Seas and Prevailing Winds
I think AI is a bit of a boogeyman haunting people’s dreams. I’m sure with more organic, artsy things, it’ll get to a point where it does amazing models. AI can’t think logically though, and can’t think beyond the data you feed it. There’s a lot it can’t do, and wont be able to do for the foreseeable future.
I can’t feed AI an image of a steam train piston assembly and expect it to pop out a fully functional model that moves smoothly and operates as intended. There’s a ton of questions along the way for something like that, that AI just can’t do. It can probably produce a proximation of what that might look like, but forget about it being functional. If I want to make some important changes too, forget about that. It can’t logically think through it, so if I want something that it doesn’t yet know, it’ll struggle.
