This may be the reason we've been experiencing fewer downloads lately

TL;DR: Some download aggregator sites (e.g., 3dgo.app) redirect users to MakerWorld, but depending on how MakerWorld counts “valid” downloads, those may not always add to our stats. Combined with other known quirks (LAN-only printers, non-logged-in users, delayed updates), this could explain why many of us are seeing fewer downloads than expected.

The Main Point

Several designers have noticed inconsistencies between downloads, prints, and ratings. One possible reason is that downloads routed through third-party aggregator sites may not always be counted by MakerWorld’s reward system.

This could be a contributing factor to the general decline in reported downloads we’ve been seeing.

Supporting Reasons

  1. Aggregator Sites Are Emerging
    • Sites like 3dgo.app list MakerWorld models alongside models from Printables, Thingiverse, etc.
    • When you click “Download” there, you are redirected back to the original MakerWorld model page.

Here my original MakerWorld model (link) and here the same model on 3dgo.app (link)

  1. MakerWorld’s Counting Rules Are Strict

    • Downloads only count when they are initiated through MakerWorld under specific conditions.
    • Cases that don’t count include:
      • LAN-only Bambu printers (no cloud link).
      • Non-logged-in users.
      • Possibly “automated” or unusual referrer-based downloads.
    • Many users have reported anomalies like:
      • 0 downloads but 1 print
      • ratings for print profiles without corresponding prints
  2. Filtering Affects Reward Points

    • Since the Rewards system is tied to verified downloads/prints, strict filtering means not every genuine use of our models shows up in our stats.
    • Aggregator-driven traffic might look like automation to MakerWorld’s filters, reducing the count.

What This Means for Us

  • It’s possible we are losing out on download counts (and points) when people use aggregator sites or indirect routes.
  • Even when people really print or rate our work, the system may not reflect it in our analytics.
  • This could explain the recent perception of “fewer downloads” despite continued interest.

Next Steps

  • It would be great to get clarification from the MakerWorld team:
    • Do downloads referred from external sites like 3dgo.app count as valid?
    • Can some of the anomalies (rating without print, print without download, etc.) be addressed?
  • Meanwhile, encouraging users to download directly from MakerWorld may help.

What do others think… have you noticed similar discrepancies?

Many users have reported anomalies like:
0 downloads but 1 print

IIRC, when you print from Bambu Handy it is printed directly through the cloud service and no download happens, so only a print would be counted. That’s likely the reason.

…and how about a 5-star print profile rating but 0 downloads and 0 prints… like on this one?

This can actually be caused by printing directly from handy, as nothing is downloaded it won’t count as a download but will count as a print

Fair enough, then please see above…

My guess is the user had already hit MakerWorld’s daily limit of five counted downloads, so this one didn’t register. The system does that to stop people farming downloads for rewards, which explains why it shows zero downloads but still got a rating.

I’ve seen my downloads and prints not registering even when they were first in the week. Still was able to leave review after print.
As for aggregate sites - its sketch from copyright side and while potentially somewhat useful for user at the same time it adds extra layer of risk. You don’t have visibility of what you are clicking.
I’ve also noticed interesting situation where print of 3mf file from printables registered as completed print for review on maker world (3mf created in Bambu studio) - that points at reviews being triggered purely by Bambu studio and embedded in 3mf tag pointing to design.

This is something @MakerWorld should look into. Could be a loophole that has been exploited by scammers to game reward points.

Okay, so the download didn’t register… I’ll just accept that (il)logic for a moment… what about the print then… is there also a limit on prints? I mean 0 downloads, 1 print, 1 rating is one thing… but 0 prints and a print rating is just looking ridiculous… next thing you know, I’m getting accused of manipulating the comments or something… because how on earth can you have a print profile rating without anybody having printed your model?

I hope you’re understanding now that since these metrics are gamified into payments; when the company wants to reduce payments, they will find ways to foul the metrics, and now the whole thing becomes untrustworthy and feels like reality-gaslighting…
