Top layer (wavy filament)

Hi!
I have a rather surprising (at least to me) problem with the top surface layer on my Bambu Lab P2S.

The print settings are standard except for:

  • top surface speed: 50 mm/s (instead of 150 mm/s),

  • quality → top surface line width: 0.32 mm (instead of 0.42 mm),

  • top surface pattern: Monotonic Line (instead of Monotonic).

With these settings, prints made with Bambu Lab PLA Matte (important!) in black come out like in photo 2 (perfectly smooth).

However, prints made with Bambu Lab PLA Basic or Devil Design Silk, using the exact same settings, come out like in photo 1 — the part marked in red (wavy filament, but only on the top layer).

But I noticed that if I redirect the incoming air downward (so the air does not blow directly onto the filament cooling fan), the waves suddenly disappear (the part marked in blue).

How should I deal with this problem?
Should I lower the nozzle temperature? (I tried, but even though I save the change, the app still shows printing at 220°C — I changed it to 205°C.) Or should I reduce cooling?

P.S. For some reason, with the exact same settings, some prints occasionally come out like in photo 3 (using the same Bambu Basic / Devil Design filament). But those successful prints seem pretty random.

Try drying the filament? seems to be the universal quality improvement

The filament is dry. Also, I placed it into the AMS immediately after opening the package (it was never left outside the AMS).

yeah I know but some people recommend drying even if is fresh from the bag, I am not sure how useful is doing this, but it is worth the test

Problem solved. It turns out that Bambu Basic filament and Devil Design Silk do not like additional cooling. After disabling the auxiliary side fan, the prints come out very well. Additionally, in the case of Devil Design Silk filament, increasing the nozzle temperature to 230°C also helps.

Now I’m experimenting with the G-code so the printer stops overriding the cooling settings configured in the filament profile. Which honestly makes no sense, because without modifying the G-code, changing the cooling settings in the filament options doesn’t work at all…
