Trouble with a particular print: Slicer settings or other issue?

Hi All. I’m trying to print a model from thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5510411/files

It is a wind turbine blade and in an effort to make it larger I scaled the model and split it to fit on two plates.

When the top half gets to around 60%, it fails. But it fails in a way I can’t understand. The print head seems to accelerate and smash into the model and break off one of the vanes. I have re oriented the model several times, but it still seems to happen in the same place.

My setup is P1S with AMS and I am printing this using eSun PLA+ using the standard / default generic PLA+ setting.

I have changed the speed and acceleration settings after the first few failures but the issue still happens. It has a really noisy sound, almost like the belts are skipping at a particular point. The P1S is stock with only lubricating and cleaning since purchase.

The issue doesn’t seem to be with the filament etc so I’m wonder if there is something in the split / scale / slice process I have broken? Any suggestions gratefully received.

In the meantime, I am going to print a small, one plate, version of the blade to test.

Tricky to say. Do you have pic’s of the failure? And slicer previews? That may help in the doagnosis.

From your description, I’d guess at curling, warping or failing supports but without more information, it is just guesswork.

Thanks for the reply. I agree, it’s hard to diagnose. Unfortunately, print rage got the better of me and I threw all out :frowning:
The print seems perfect until 60%.It’s more the sudden thrash of the print head that has me confused.
I think I just need to go back to basics on this one.

I think that doing a small version is a good approach for this.

From this, I’d guess at warping or curling. So really dry filament would be a must and adaptive layer height may help if the sharper edges of the vane cause curling.

Apologies for the delay. I printed a small version (1 plate) and I have noticed that at the same or similar height that the print quality starts to be bad. Can anyone suggest what is wrong with the model or printer? I am baffled by this one.

Pic below: Small model in black pla +, larger version in white PLA +, both printed with generic PLA + profile. Supports were used where necessary.

Those pics do help:

  1. Really dry filament!!!
  2. Use the paint-on-support tool to check overhang angles in 1° steps. Design for overhangs is often applied in 2D but in 3D, overhangs can increase when angled. => Need for supports.
  3. Long cantilevers => Decrease speed with height, may need “wipe on retract” and/or additional supports for stabilization.
  4. Avoid curling at all cost => See 1., warm build environment, low layer height, slow printing
