Tutorial On How To Color Swap Mid-Layer With No AMS

Many people do not have an ams, but they still want to 3d print in multicolor, and if you are competent, try following along with this tutorial

In Bambu studio, click the little notepad + pencil icon in the top left (it appears when you hover your mouse over the printer select button!)

Once you click that, this menu appears (as shown in second picture)
Click machine Gcode and scroll down to change filament gcode

Copy and paste the “Pause Gcode” which is directly under “Change Filament Gcode”, or just copy and paste this gcode: M400 U1 (ONLY FOR A1 MINI)
Paste the Gcode into “Change Filament Gcode”

And then save the modifed gcode values by clicking the floppy disc icon

What this does: Whenever an ams is plugged in, and it wants to color swap, it calls the Change Filament Gcode, if no AMS is present when it calls the command, it doesnt do anything since theres no external motors, But if you swap it with the pause gcode, it pauses the print when it wants you to change filament, allowing you to do multi-color prints with no AMS

I heard a while ago that bambu studio added a setting to do this with a checkbox, instead of modifying Gcode, but I couldn’t find it in my version of Studio.

If it is per layer you want and not mid layer, you can click on the “height” bar at the right hand side after slicing to insert a manual pause? (It’s the bar that you drag to see the layers going up and down). For new users I think this is better; gcode editing can have consequences if they mess something up

Edit I misread the original post.

The approach described is for mid-layer color/filament changes without AMS rather than in-between layers. That.is important for example for first and last layer text or images.

There are prior threads going back a few years on manual changes without AMS which rely on this general approach (although it has been getting easier  ).

I have corrected my earlier post.
