Unable to feed filament into the extruder. P1S & AMS

P1S with AMS

Only 1 month old and has printed successfully every day since I set it up on Jan 1st.

I live in the hot sub tropics so I have desiccant holders in the spools, in the bottom of the AMS and ones at the front so I had successfully taken the humidity from the worst to the best setting. I also had dried the black filament I was using in a SOVOL drier.

I had successfully printed plate 1 and 2 (4 times) of this print profile. I was starting on plate 3 when my problem started. I do not believe it is this print that caused the problem but they say to mention what you were doing when the problem occurred.

1st problem was “extruding filament failed”, suggested extruder might be clogged so I did 3 cold pulls. I had been using black PLA so I pulled with white PLA. They were all pretty clean right from the first pull.

2nd attempt it said unable to feed filament into the extruder. I checked the filament was not twisted, spool was not stuck, and that all of the tubes from the AMS to the extruder were clear and not blocked.

3rd attempt, as I tried to load the black PLA filament and watch how far it was going I noticed the black filament, after getting stuck, was coming out with a white looking substance all over it. In case it was wet filament or other filament problem I put in some dry pink then white filament with the same error occurring… the white filament also came out with black dust on it. I’m guessing the black filament was scraping on something and the white is too but it is also picking up the debris from the black.

4th attempt I pulled the AMS apart, everything was clear, I tried again and noticed it is all 4 spools that are have trouble feeding through. You can give it a light physical push and it starts up again but continually stops.

Sometimes the filament can feed almost to the extruder, it stops about 2 or 3 inches short. However other times it can’t even load the filament to read it. I have even had it go right to the extruder then when you go to print it has the same error again.

I’m thinking this is an AMS problem. Do I need to pull out all of the tubes from the AMS and replace them with new ones? Do I need to pull out the triangle part that all the filament feeds into to see if that is blocked?

I have put on the rear spool holder and have printed a perfect benchy with that black PLA.

I did read about it being a possible fault in the Buffer at the back but the problem seems closer to the AMS because sometimes it does not even make it to the Buffer??? is that it’s official name?

So where do I go from here? I have not gone to support yet as I want to be able to say I’ve done everything suggested if it turns out to be a warranty issue!

For those with the same problem I found this and will report back later today after further troubleshooting ….

Following the instructions given and the photo provided I went ahead and checked these screws… mine “looked” different but some screws were loose so I gave them a slight turn.

What I saw when I opened up the AMS

The problem still wasn’t fixed so I decided to take the whole part off and check underneath to see what was going on there… then I realised the image they were showing was the underside and no point tightening these screws as the whole part was cracked… I have put in a support ticket and hopefully will get a replacement part soon.

Bambu Lab support replied to my ticket and approved a replacement part by the end of the day.

Last comment before the topics closes. My replacement is on its was but it is going to take at least 4 to 7 days to get to me.

The part is called an AMS Bearing support for internal hub unit.

It appears to be an issue for many people and as a person that has worked in assembling electronic devices for UAVs for a living a decade ago I am going assume it is more of an instillation issue of possible over tightening? Where mine cracked it definitely looked like that was a possibility. I guess it is a balance between under tighten and it won’t grab or over tighten and it puts pressure on weak spot???

If you are looking for a quick fix search the above component on Bambu handy and you will get many prints with positive reviews.

I am printing several replacements and I suggest anyone with an AMS print it out before you even need it!
