Unconventional Way of Testing First Flow Rate Pass

Good Morning Everyone!

Maybe this will help some of you while calibrating the first Flow Rate pass in Orca Slicer.

So I’m sitting in my office this morning tinkering about with a new CF-PETG filament. Loaded the Flow Rate test and printed them out. Like some of you know, picking out the “Smoothest” of the first 9 samples can be a slightly daunting task at times. At first glance IMO they all normally look pretty dang smooth! Especially if you’re testing a darker filament.

So while looking at them closely to identify the best of the bunch, I had a thought… Seeing as this test is supposed to get us the best “Flow”, wouldn’t some of the samples that aren’t “Flowing” enough have slight air gaps between the layer lines?

So I started first with -20, pressed the sample to my lips and blew on it.

Air passed right through the model!

Then I moved to -15, same thing!

It wasn’t until I got to 5 that the air gaps seemed to be tight and wouldn’t let any air to pass through.

Perhaps it’s an unconventional way of weeding out some of the test samples from the first Flow Pass, but it might help some individuals who are struggling with picking the smoothest one from the first pass at least.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, so I figured I’d pass my findings along!

I was trying to print an air tight model and was surprised I could blow air right through it through a solid looking surface.

I hadn’t calibrated anything. It’s an interesting test that could be especially useful for anyone wanting to print anything that moves/contains air.

my first thought was “well thats done it, now the other ones are going to be jealous” might be the “dad raised too many girls” training I have…
