Uneven overhang on some figures on same buildplate

Good morning Bambu Community!

Appreciate in advance for any advice you can provide!

I was printing a plate of this figurine, and noticed that there were some overhang issues to the ones in the front. The back seemed fine, and I was skipping prints (which is why some are more complete than others) but cancelled completed in the end.

These were all part of the same plate/print. Ive tried slowing down for overhangs and no luck. I currently have it printing at even slower speeds and changing the layer heights from 0.2 to 0.16 seems to help a little, but still getting some in the front with issues and the ones in the back printing perfectly.

Trying to understand if this is more of a cooling issue, speed, all the above or something I cant even think of.

Looks like cooling to me.

If you have the moment, you can watch it literally on the printbed, you should be able to see that area molten and wiggle as the extruder passes by as confirmation

Increase fan, if able. Maybe reduce nozzle temp 5degrees to see. If that is registering as overhang in slicer, use overhang speeds/fans to put some more cool into it. It also might be resolved by altering infill in that area just to give it more mass to stick to and hold itself better while molten.

The Benchy is a good tool - if you know how to read it.

The main issue with overhangs is not really speed but filament calibration.
If the temp is off it will show on overhangs, same for the flow ratio and even the K-factor in some cases.
The new layer has only one wall on the inside to provide restrictions and is partially printed in thin air.
Means it expands out of the nozzle quite differently.
The slicer adjusts for this but this only works well if the calibration is spot on.

If you keep an eye on the print you can often see how the extruded filament is not forming a nice a flat surface on the top - it tends to curl up.
Depending on the angle you can also see how it overlaps the previous layer.
Changing the print speed affects a lot and not always does an overhang come out better by drastically reducing the speed as this changes affects all print parameters.

Your nozzle temp should be just high enough to provide a proper layer bond at all print speeds and moves.
Any higher and the filament can soften too much, any lower and the print might not hold together for long.

UPDATE:

I appreciate the responses and tried multiple methods to resolve the issue

  • changing infill by height
  • tried the file on a second machine and it had the same issue
  • lowered the printing temp and increasing the AUX Fan to 100%
  • Printing with the door open
  • orienting the part differently, weird how the front of the plate printed worse than the back, but still issues either way.

Nothing seemed to resolve the issue. I ended up doing some monthly maintence on it, and hopefully it doesnt sound silly, but turned the machine off and let it rest for a few hours, turned it on, and it seems to print fine now…

user_3026326371 was correct, and i was noticing the “pullback” on those failed parts. Definitely something to look out for in the future.
