It is possible. Merge the two objects, then switch from GLOBAL to OBJECTS view. There you can select the object you want to lift, Click on the MOVE icon and now you can lift it off the build plate with the Z-Axis arrow.

Another hack is to add a positive part to the object you want to lift, and you can make it a tiny 1x1 part and put it somewhere in the corner out of the way. As long as that part is on the bed, you can move your actual object anywhere you need.
