In the past I used to insert a PAUSE in the Bambu Studio slicer. When the printer paused I could change the filament to a different color.
Today the A1 printer paused. I unloaded the filament (the process went normally, no filament break) but I noticed the display telling me to RETRY the unload. There was no getting out of that screen.
I turned power off and then back on, selected to not continue the previous print job. I loaded the filament and started the print from the beginning. When the PAUSE came the same thing happened.
Again I turned the printer off and back on and this time I selected to continue the print job, then quickly hit the PAUSE icon on the display. I loaded the new filament. During the load I noticed that the nozzle temperature on the display did not increase from about 150 degrees. However the filament was extruded and finished loading. The print job continued, but the toolhead was moving around without extruding filament.
At this point I am at a loss as to how I should proceed.

A quick test revealed that once the PAUSE is reached I can perform the UNLOAD and LOAD filament and RESUME printing from the computer instead of the printerâs touch screen. The printerâs display remains unchanged until the printing is finished and I do the final filament UNLOAD from the computer. At that point the display resumes normal operation.
Looks like a firmware issue.

I received a reply from Bambu. The PAUSE should no longer be used for filament changes. The Change Filament option on the menu now works with non-AMS printers.
Testing it now and it looks good. More streamlined than using PAUSE, UNLOAD, LOAD.

I had that happen the first time I tried this new feature. I think it happened because I changed the model color after inserting the Color Change in the slicer.
Make a note at which layer the Color Change is set then delete the Color Change.
Change the color of the model (even if it is the same as before), then slice. Now go to the layer where you want the color change and set it.
I did this for other projects and the printer didnât unload the filament at the beginning of the print.

I think there might be a slight misunderstanding. I am not manually inserting a âColor Changeâ at a specific layer height via the preview slider.
Instead, I am using the newer Object-based multi-color workflow: my model consists of multiple separate objects, and I simply assign Filament 2 to the top objects in the âObjectsâ tab before slicing. In theory, the slicer should handle everything automatically without any manual timeline g-code injection.
Thatâs why I am a bit confused as to why the printer still forces a full unload/reload sequence at the very beginning of the print, even though Filament 1 is already pre-loaded and the first layers belong exclusively to an object assigned to Filament 1.

No misunderstanding here. Your message simply did not mention âI am using the newer Object-based multi-color workflowâ. So your problem is different than the one I had.

I am using an AMS gen 1, need an additiona slot #5, which I donât have. So, I have added the pause command at the layer I need to change the filament. I cannot unload using the Handy App or the printers interface. How can I unload/load at pause using an AMS?
After the bew Update, the Pause doesenât work anymore. You need ro add a filament Chance in the layer Premiere. When you print it, you can klick âmulticolour with Extertalâ and print. When it reaches the Layer, it automaticly unloads and loads with yout help, like normal.
And for those of you struggling (like I was) to understand how to do this âŚ
- Add another filament using the + sign on the left side panel (the option to switch filaments does not occur unless you have more than one filament listed under âProject Filamentsâ)
- Then select where you want to change the filament in layer Preview, by right-clicking on the slider and selecting the filament to use.
This issue I first reported here is now fixed with the new firmware v1.08.01.00.
Now you can use a PAUSE to change filament instead of using a Filament Change option, if you so desire, and the printerâs LCD display will not get stuck. You use the touch screen to complete the steps instead of having to go back to the computer.
