I was reading the updated community guidelines that just posted and was a bit worried about the advertising section. It forbids “External guidance including but not limited to links or scan code to non-MakerWorld related businesses, organizations, online stores, or websites”. Would this include links for parts needed for construction. If I used a certain bearing not available on Maker Supply, would linking to an Amazon listing be a violation? I am not enrolled in any affiliate programs and have no interest in doing such but this seems very limiting on what guidance we can provide to users of our models.
My big example is that I have a somewhat popular sword model that I updated using a guide and electronic components from an “external” website. Would a link be a violation in that case? What about a part name and mention where it was purchased from? Or should I just keep to the part name?
All I want to do is make a light up sword with sound effects but the prop kit available from Maker Supply is excessively expensive and only need a fraction of the parts in the kit for my project. My part cost came out to about $50-60usd. But their kit is $120 and doesn’t include a long enough led strip. The parts I need are not available individually on maker supply.
I would recommend merging this with the other related topic that appeared first, albeit with a less obvious title.
I seriously doubt it, MakerWorld wish to foster the ability to have printed models blended with non-printable parts. I imagine they prefer their own MakerSupply (MS) parts be listed when available. I post both, often, MS doesn’t have the parts required, so I post where to get them.
Any removal of this would harm, not help them.
The issue they are trying to abate is the commercial advertising or off-site linking to sites for marketing purposes.
I will be upload some Arduino based models soon and MS doesn’t have those, so, I will obviously be left with the only alternatives.
In relation to your specific example of the LED strip lengths. If they do not sell one suitable, you can’t list theirs. Facts do not outweigh wishes to use MS.
I missed that one topic since I thought they were just pointing out the trending tab.
I figure that is the idea but wanted to point it out for clarity. There is a lot of room for interpretation. They have been promoting Maker Supply much more lately. Just worried that they may try to box us in creatively.
I have been posting to Makerworld since it publicly launched and haven’t had so much as a hold on points. I’d rather not violate a rule if I can avoid it.
I’m really confused about the new rules as well, and I wonder if something was worded or translated bad.
We seemingly have a complete ban on advertisement, without any exception if I understand it correct, which is true for models and the profile as well.
Now the profile even has an official function to add links to social media presences (Including Patreon), which can all count towards advertisement, and even if it’s just self-advertisement. So how can there be an official function to do something that breaks the rules?
Or does “advertisement” not really include things like self-advertisement to your own pages? I really hope MakerWorld / Bambu Lab can clarify this before the rules become active.
the rules are active, albeit not enforced. Old rules aren’t enforced either, though. Take a glance at the community tab and you’ll find lots of people reposting their own posts twenty times in a row. That’s called spam, yet they do nothing.
