Upgraded from P1S to P2S and the AMS regret has overcome me

I recently upgraded(today) from a P1S with an AMS 2 Pro to a new P2S, and I’m starting to regret the decision. My plan was to continue using my existing AMS 2 Pro by moving it over to the P2S, but it appears there is no way to connect it. The P2S doesn’t have the required AMS port, and I didn’t see any indication during purchase that AMS support requires buying the bundle version. Before I write this off as a limitation and doom spiral, can someone confirm whether I’m missing something?

You do not say if you bought the combo variant of the P2S, you imply you didn’t.

The P2S (without combo) doesn’t include a buffer at all. It only has an external input.

It is technically possible to connect the AMS to the external input (known as the inlet), but a buffer is strongly recommended to protect the mechanism.

They do state this on the purchase page, but it could be clearer.

The standalone P2S (without AMS) does not include a filament buffer.

If you already own an AMS/AMS 2 Pro, you may also need a filament buffer to use on P2S.

You’ll need to add a filament buffer to the P2S to use the AMS. (Your P1S probably already had one on the back. It’s a slightly different design from the P2S.)

Correct. I did not buy the combo because I already had the AMS 2 and buffer. Silly me thinking I would be able to use the same buffer or that it would at least have a port to plug in an AMS. But it’s completely naked. No Port at all. And I saw nowhere that said I needed to buy the buffer in order to use the AMS. I think that’s the issue is even if I had seen the tiny note which I did not. I would never have expected they’re not to be a port to plug it into

I looked at the purchase page and did not see then or now. Tomorrow I’ll check it out on the computer, but from the phone I can’t seem to find it while looking for it. As I currently own six AMS 2 pros I didn’t figure the added cost and space was necessary for a seventh.

I have the same problem. Even worse: I wrote to support and they told me not to worry because I have the hub. I’m really disappointed.

It does tell you on the Store website that you need the filament buffer

It does on the computer but not on the mobile version. Even now on the purchase page there is no mention.

This is the only mention at all on the mobile mobile app that would indicate The hub did not come with the non-combo version. As far as I’m concerned, this is ludicrous and unacceptable.

Ist there an connector behind the plug in the middle where the p2s buffer will be plugged in?

If so, why don‘t you order it and you will be fine…

The part we need appears to be backordered in the US until mid-December. Guess I am single filament printing for now. I too did not see any mention to purchase the P2S specific hub and there was no upsell offered to add this. Maybe the added that after the fact but for sure last Wed there was no mention.

Yeah, I fell into the same trap, when my P2S arrives, I can’t use my new AMS-2 without buying the special buffer ($30.00, not available until sometime in December)
No mention of the need to purchase this special buffer. Now, I own a P1S, an X1C, two AMS-1’s an AMS-2, a 4 port hub (that doesn’t work with the AMS-2, even with the latest firmwares) a new P2S and a single port buffer for the P1S.

Maybe I’ll go into business selling some of this stuff…

So, what is wrong with your hub that it does not work with the P1S or X1C?

There is indeed no mention about it in the US store if you are visiting it on mobile. In the EU shop it appears also in the mobile version while selecting only the printer and no combo.

In the same boat here in the UK. P2S filament buffer not available until late December! Picked one up on AliExpress, due to arrive in a couple of days.

OK, so lets get this straight -
It takes two things to make a 3d print:

  1. A printer - check, that comes today according to FedEx…
  2. Filament - check, got shelves full of that
HOWEVER, the printer has no way to apply the filament to the printer without the $30.00 gizmo that goes on the back of the printer!

So, I guess I bought a car without a transmission? A light fixture without a bulb? How come there was no mention of this when I bought the printer? My other two printers (a P1S and a X1C) came with the buffers/hubs, making them able to print out of the box.
The AMS-2 had all kinds of warnings about buying the proper hub/buffer with the X1C and using the other 2 AMS-1’s but not the P2S

Had I known this, I could have purchased the buffer when I purchased the printer, or purchased the printer as a combo with the buffer already installed, or maybe just not used the printer with an AMS? …
BTW, how come the combo’s are available with the buffers, but the buffers are not available stand alone so people can print when they receive the printers?
So, this printer is not usable without the buffer?

Hello Steve KA5YFC I am K6HUH. In answer to your question:
I tried to connect the AMS-2 to one or more AMS-1’s and it did not work. Someone suggested that I needed to update the AMS-1 firmware for them to work with the AMS-2. I did that on ONE of the ams-1’s to try it out - it still failed.
I disconnected the updated AMS-1 from the AMS-2, and instead connected the AMS-1 with the old firmware to the AMS-2, and that worked! at least, it would load filament successfully, (Loading filament is something the updated firmware would NOT do) but it throws an error on the screen of the X1C stating that the firmware is out of date.
Since it sorta worked, I’m not upgrading the firmware on this AMS-1.

For some reason, I am unable to upgrade JUST THE FIRMWARE ON THE AMS-1, I have to upgrade the firmware on the X1C, which automatically upgrades the AMS-1 if connected to the X1C but it is already at the latest version…I am reluctant to upgrade any more firmware, I think that process is flawed.

As it stands now, I can use the AMS-2 with the X1C, and one (of the outdated firmware) AMS-1’s, and use the other updated AMS-1 on my P1S stand alone.
When my new P2S arrives today, I will not be able to use ANY AMS, because I did not know that a special buffer/hub was necessary, and will not be available until sometime in December, rendering, I guess an unusable P2S.

No, in that scenario you don’t need a $30 gizmo. You would put the filament on the external spool holder and print.

The stand alone P1S/X1C didn’t come with a buffer or hub. The original AMS came with a buffer and the only way to get the hub was to buy it.

If you bought the P1S/X1C combo they did come with the buffer, as does the P2S combo.

It is.

You are correct, I was thinking that the one AMS I bought separate from the printer, the printer already had a buffer/hub on the back. I don’t remember which printer that was.

The P2S:
I tried attaching the reel holder to the rear, not seeing where the holder went, I thought it was the right side of the printer, but found the bracket mounted on the left side of the printer.
I was able to then load and extrude filament, so all is well, just no AMS until I get the buffer.
