Use 2 ams ht to swap between 2 TPU filaments on 1 nozzle

Hi! If I own 2 AMS HT can I connect them both to the right nozzle of the H2D and print a part using 2 TPU colors (i.e. right nozzle swaps between the 2 AMS HT’s?

I’m not sure if the retraction mechanism works when bypassing part of the AMS.

Multi color TPU prints was something I was excited about with the H2D. It’s unfortunate the left nozzle doesn’t work with TPU.

Side note: anyone tried mixing TPU 90A with TPU for ams?

Yes you can do it with a pause to change TPU at different layer heights, but not true multi color. After pause is engaged you can manually retract the extruder and then load a new filament and again manually extruder it. You dont need 2 HT for that or even 1, you can do it from external spool as only one filament is loaded at a time. For TPU 95A and other soft varieties the HT is just a glorifier external spool.

And yes you can print TPU for AMS and 95/90A together from two nozzles.

It won’t work, anything loaded from the cover exit port not connected to the AMS HT port will have to be unloaded manually and then loaded manually everytime you change filament.

If you use the 2 nozzles with left loaded with TPU for AMS, it will work. I use TPU 90A on the right nozzle but in the AMS HT (cover exit of course) located besides my printer and I have a long PTFE tubing from that exit to a PTFE connector at the TPU bypass entry of the H2D. I have large radius and it works fine so I wonder if it will not also work on the left nozzle actually.

Left nozzle is blocked from printing TPU (95A and other soft varieties) in the slicer/firmware so its not possible. You will get an error and it wont even slice.

TLDR: No! The current AMS variants do not let you switch between filaments when bypassing the AMS feeding funnel.

Not exactly the same but some alternate options are:

  1. Manual per layer pauses to switch filament (difficult and time consuming)

  2. use AMS compatible filament like TPU for AMS.

  3. break bambu slicer to let you use TPU on the left nozzle (maybe just say it’s PLA with custom settings to match TPU)

I think the problem with #3 due to the left hot end moving up and down there is a larger gap between the extruder exit and nozzle inlet when it in the down position, so a flexible filament would get bunched up. I think thats reason they blocked printing TPU from left nozzle in software, due to a mechanical limitation.

Hopefully the new H2S variant will be able to print 2 soft TPUs in one print with its single nozzle + dual feed from 2 external spools.

As of yet there’s no reliable system for automatic multicolor TPU .
Not public at least. Give me some more months. I’m working on something :eyes:
