Vertical printing issue - Standing ring deformed

Hello,

I have my P1S several months now and already printed some rolls of different filaments with it.

Now I want to print a ring-shaped object with Bambu PLA in a standing orientation.
The print itself worked, but there is some deformation happening at the lower end of the object.
Appended is my Bambu-Project and some pictures of the problem.
I’m still learning in 3D-printing, so I would appreciate every help to understand, what the problem is with this print.
As you can see in the pictures, the deformation always happens at the first vertical angle, on both sides of the ring, but on each side always at one edge which is diagonally opposite to the other one.

I tried different support settings (angle %, standard and tree), different layer heights (from 0,08 to 0,20) and so on, but the results are nearly the same always.

Have you calibrated the filament for pressure advance and flow ratio? Small layers are more sensitive to those settings.

Another thing to try is printing in ‘silent mode’ (50% speed).

Normally I print always with 0,20mm layer height.
I did not make any filament calibration, because everything else works perfectly with the original Bambu filament PLA.
I already tried to reduce the speed to 50%, but also no change.

The rest of the vertical side of the ring looks good, it is just the lower part of it and interestingly as you can see on the pictures, only one outer corner always at each side.

If the calibration of the filament is off, then it should print more bad all the way to the top or?

I might try to print it tomorrow. I loaded it is studio and was playing with slicing settings. I turned on variable layer height and sliced it. I will try to print it tomorrow.

O.K. I printed 6 of these trying to find the best settings. I am not sure if they will meet your expectations.

  • P1S printer
  • Bambu PLA Basic - dried with standard settings
  • Textured PEI plate

Thanks for the effort and the file, I will try it today with my printer.

The important and interesting question for me is, why this is/was happening. So that I get better knowledge in 3D-printing and understand the issue, so that next time I know why and what to do.

The area of the item where you are having issues is an overhang that is close to the limits for just standard printing. I used the variable layer height with smoothing so it would use thinner layers in those areas. I also painted the trouble spots with “seam blockers” because they can cause issues with small features.

When you open the .3mf file in Bambu Studio you can see the items I changed by the circular arrow next to the setting.

As you will hear and read about fixing printing issues.

  1. Make sure your build plate is clean. Wash with warm water and regular dish soap. Handle the plate by the edges or wear nitrile gloves to keep skin oils, lotion, etc from contaminating the plate.
  2. Make sure your filament is dry and store it in a sealed bag with dessicant. I use vacuum bags and color changing dessicant. Just because you just opened the package does not mean it is dry from the factory. PLA is not as sensitive as other printing materials but it is still something to manage.

I have printed your file and it looks better now, but I thought that this kind of angle would be still fine for printing. Lesson learned…

Can you also tell me, why on my previous prints (see the pictures in the initial post) there was always one edge much more deformed than the other one? Is this a temperature thing when the lower layers are cooling and deforming the edges and bending them upwards?

PS:
-) I clean the build plate after every print with isopropanol alcohol with a soft towel.
-) The humidity is at around 10% in my AMS with a lot of dryboxes inside.

Another thing:
How would you do it, if this ring is printed horizontally?
Because of the small wider o-ring at the top, the ring itself can not lay flat on the build plate and therefore the ring is lifted from the build plate with a big support area underneath.

The issue is probably a combination of the overhang angle and cooling for such a small feature. I tried printing with the part rotated 90 Greg on the plate but the issue moved to the right face of the part (away from the part cooling fan).

If you keep your overhang angles >40 deg you will have better results. The lowest limit is around 30 deg, but that requires a lot of tuning to get it looking good. PETG and TPU are more sensitive to overhang angle than PLA. Keep the angle 45+ deg for PETG and TPU for easy printing.

Be careful using alcohol to clean your build plates, it can damage the PEI coating. Bambu recommends dish soap and warm water.

Dessicant in an AMS will help slow down moisture getting in your filament. It takes heat and air movement to drive it out once it gets in. A lot of filament is damp right out of the packaging. PETG, TPU, Nylon, ASA, etc are more sensitive and need to be dried once they are removed from the packaging. PLA will leave fine strings when they are getting too damp.

Is this your design? If so, you could make it thicker so you can lay it flat for printing. Since you have an AMS you could use PLA support material to hold the body off the plate in a horizontal position.
