Week cut off for designs visibility

I’ve noticed quite critical quirk of Makerworld way of displaying models when casually browsing.
Default filtering when opening “3d Models” defaults to “trending” & “7days” - which wouldn’t be an issue if “7 days trending” meant all models trending in last 7 days. Instead of that we are getting trending models PUBLISHED in last 7 days. That results with drastic impact on model views/ downloads and prints moment that model hits 7day age. Once it hits that point it becomes virtually invisible for casual browsing

Solution:

  • Bump 7 days to month as default, give bit more exposure to popular models
  • Change time parameter from age of model to time when specific metric was counted. ie. Instead most downloaded 7days old model change to model most downloaded during last 7 days

I think this is done in part to address complaints that popular models occupying the spotlight for too long, leaving newer models little chance of being discovered.

Agree that old models occupation of main page can be problematic, but at the same time 7 days trending doesn’t improve situation too much - if your design doesn’t go viral within pretty much hours from release it will likely never pick up. Maybe randomization of landing page would be an option to improve chances of designs?

I think the current setup makes sense. The 7-day trending filter is meant to highlight new stuff – that’s the whole point. If it was “most downloaded in the last 7 days” regardless of post date, you’d just see the same top models over and over again, and new uploads would get buried instantly.

The current system gives every model a shot at visibility during its first week; this is also probably just long enough for Makerworld’s search algorithms to get a feel for what terms someone may be searching where they want that new model to show up. It’s not perfect, but it’s way better than letting older viral models dominate the front page forever.

To truly give new stuff chance landing page would need to be randomized - even sorting by newest is not helping when taking into consideration volume of submissions. I’ve uploaded model 1h ago, now its 30 rows down on “newest” - what is the chance of design being spotted?

Something definitely needs to be tweaked, but it’s hard for me to say what exactly. I experienced this with a model recently here Slide-on Chip Bag Clips by Just say no to poop MakerWorld: Download Free 3D Models which really took off nicely in the first week, getting ~100+ likes/saves per day before coming to a screeching halt on day 8.

Even now 18 days later, if I go to the category page which defaults to ‘Trending past 30 days’ Other Household Models - MakerWorld somehow my model is completely absent. How could that be possible? There are models with single digit saves/downloads yet mine (and surely many others) with hundreds are nowhere?

@MakerWorld seems like you need to consider how you might adjust your algorithm for how the ‘hotScore’ value is determined so that newly popular models don’t just disappear after 7 days when viewing Trending models.

Now you know the volume of new uploads. What are the chances that your model will be shown by random selection?

Let’s say the random process results in someone else’s model uploaded 6 days ago shows up but yours which was uploaded one hour ago never gets a chance to even show up for one time. Will you call it unfair or the selection is rigged then?

I think the current system works by and large. It gives every new upload a chance to get on the front page, even if only briefly. The order is strictly by upload time, no chance for the system to play favorites.

@DWdesigns If I have to compete on who is newer with

That model is in Exclusive program - AI generated model, AI generated description, Ai generated images simulating printed textures. Image file names are literally “ChatGPT Image 4 ago 2025, 23_10_14.png” on that model.

I will take my chance with RNG
Unless we get proper submission verification where in situation that model does not have image of printed parts it does not show up in browsing pages, and does not qualify for exclusive program boosting its visibility.

As of now, you are the “submission verification” in this situation. Just click on the print profile and report it as not having a real print image. Models on the other hand don’t require a real print image as of now.

As far as AI generated and the exclusive program… MW’s Image to 3D was not one of the listed, does-not-qualify-tools up until last month. So this is a recent change that this doesn’t qualify as “exclusive” anymore.

Why don’t you make yours exclusive as well if you think it helps? Besides, the other model was released five hours ago, has two likes, and one download. Does your model have similar stats? I mean, this is hardly going viral.
