What caused this?

My X1C has about 700 hours on it, all belts seem tight but on this print yesterday I had my first ever (in 5 years of printing) occurance of what appears to be layer shift.

The print was around 950 layers high at .16 layer height and there appears to be something resembling a layer shift on the X-axis.

The print did stop twice due to AMS feed errors but nowhere near where the imperfection occured.

This is the first and only time I will be printing this model so have not retested printing.

I will be keeping an things but wondered if anyone has any ideas of potential cause/resolution?

Possibly a layer shift due to an impact. You can add distance to z hop or change infill pattern to something other than grid to cut down on nozzle impacts. I prefer honeycomb. Bambu doesnt use closed loop steppers (i believe. pls nobody flame me if im wrong on this) and so the printer cant correct itself if steps are missed. I would personally double check my belt tension also. You already did that though.

It is able to detect step losses, if you enabled it in the settings

From experience I can say that this works. For example if the extruder rams into an object, the stepper will skip steps, then the printer will lower the bed and start the xy homing procedure, then it continues printing.

I think that this will not trigger if it doesn’t detect an impact (like it lost only a few steps, because the belt slipped on the stepper pulley), but that is just me guessing

You are correct. It does only trigger if a sudden peak in current is detected, and it will do an XY homing to re-establish the right position.

I have the recover from lost steps enabled, and had indeed my first layer shift on a 26 h Petg CF (1 full roll). In the timelapse I clearly see a drop of filament appearing, after which the layer shifts, and the “drop” stays, and slowly is overprinted. So the step loss correction does not work. Putting closed loop steppers into a bambu lab is not possible without converting the complete machine. It was a very big print: video 1043303217 on vimeo.
