What good is the RFID tag?

So I get a new reel of filament so first thing I want to do is dry it.

So I put it into my AMS HT and have to manually enter in the parameters because it won’t read the RFID unless you load it.

and even if it read the RFID tag, there are a lot of profiles missing from the drying menu, like PLA wood.

And I want it to rotate while heating.

So now I want to load it but it seems like most of the time I have to enter in what type of material it is anyway because it won’t load until you tell it the material.

And let’s say I want to use the AMT HT to hold my TPU 90A. If I enter that in, it says it’s not supported. You can’t use the automatic feeder but you can run it out the back.

So am I missing something here?

Yes, did you not read the marketing information?

Much of the issues you described are not related to RFID, but features of the AMS itself.

I have to guess you are talking about Bambu Lab filaments as you do not say. Many companies now include RFID using their own systems.

That is when the reading takes place.

Although, you are not loading it in the sense that the filament will make its way to the nozzle, just loading it into the AMS.

That is an AMS issue.

You can’t, because it doesn’t, explain per in the documentation.

That doesn’t sound right as I have not experienced that ever. An occasional failure to be recognised, yes, pull the spool out, pop it back in, and you are good. Maybe, 1 in every 100 times.

Because it isn’t.

If you use spools with no RFID tags for long enough, you would soon understand what good it is, within a couple months or so.

well the is a Bambu lab forum so yes, I am talking about bambulabs implmentation

the AMS HT is really just an extension of the 3D printer

and yes, in theory, I can see why RFID would be useful

however, because of the way bambulab has implented it, I don’t see much advantage

again, on a bambulab H2S since we are in the H2 printer section

but the AMS HT does. You have a specific rear exit port just for certain materials.

but if you set the material to TPU90 it says you can’t use it when in fact you can

so you have to setup the printer to use an external filament source and treat the AMS HT as a spool holder

well the menu is in the printer so again, it is a bambulabs printer issue

you absolutely can rotate while drying. but you can’t have the filament inserted into the auto feeder obviously

but if you don’t have the filament inserted, it won’t get read

and regardless of what you said, most of the time bambulabs is not reading the RFID tag with just insertion

with a normal workflow you would put the spool into the AMS HT and dry it with rotation.

and you are correct, this is a bambulabs issue as there is nothing to stop the AMS HT from having a mode where the reel is rotated without insertion and the RFID tag is read and then you have the proper drying information

but it doesn’t support this and drying profiles are limited

again, as you state, not a problem with RFID, but with bambulabs implementation

I am sorry I thought it was obvious this was in regards to RFID use on a bambulab H2S printer with the AMS HT

the point of the rfid is that you don’t have to manually select the filaments everytime you swap one. and it can give you an rough estimation of how much filament is left.

Yes Bambu can trigger a spool read every time you shut the lid closed, but that is very much a niche feature that maybe 1 or 2 users would ask for, when they already have PILES of other significantly more serious issues, feature requests, that need to solve right now.

If you want to feed the TPU (or any other filament for that matter) through the external port, you need to select the external spool as the used input for the printer. And the external spool always needs manual setting of the material.

Sure but that isn’t exactly obvious when it states that TPU is supported by the AMS HT.

And it seems the TPU spools don’t even have an RFID tag which is fine because there is no way to read it with the existing method of having to insert the filament into the feeder of the AMS.

And I don’t see why you couldn’t just disable the feed on the AMS HT when TPU is loaded instead of having to treat it as a generic external spool.

And the AMS HT is not even a good external spool because it has a lot of drag unless you do some modifications.

Although the good thing is you can dry while printing.

Seems you never worked with TPU 95A or softer, otherwise you wouldn’t made this remark.
Your can’t push the TPU through the feeder manually either.

And if you would be able, the quality of the print would suffer because of all the drag.

There is TPU for AMS, but that is almost as stiff as any other filament.

That fully depends upon how you route your tube. I don’t have any modifications and still use the external port.

When you use the AMS HT as a dumb external spool it has a lot of drag because of the way the filament exits and because the front roller that the spool rests on is geared

You can go to maker world and find modifications where you suspend the spool from the back roller so that the friction from that front roller is eliminated

This has nothing to do with then teflon tubing path

I stand by my statements, the way Bambulab has implemented the RFID tag reading you need to manually enter in the material if you wish to dry it with rotation

and of course there is no 3rd party support, which is a shame for the industry

when it RFID works, it is fine.

Let me try to explain it one more time.

The filament for the external spool always has to be manually defined. Reason: the external spool has no rfid reader. The rfid reader in the HT is linked to the port/nozzle where the HT is connected to, that isn’t necessarily the case for the bypass port. That could just as easily be the other nozzle (at least for the H2D).

Maybe you have a faulty HT, because my rollers are running freely when no filament is loaded in the feeder.

I assumed that you were referring to the filament feed (the standard inlet for the filament), so obviously you didn’t. Not clear what feed you are referring to then. The gears that are winding the spools are not intended as feed, only for winding the spool.
So which feed are you referring tothen?

The front roller on the AMS HT is connected to a gear which I presume turns the motor

As a result, a spool in the AMS HT doesn’t roll as smoothly as on the regular stationary holder that comes with the printer

And it certainly requires more force to move than a low friction bearing spool.

I’m not entirely sure what you are trying to say.

But let me try to explain it one more time

You can’t read the RFID tag on TPU because you can’t feed it into the AMS HT standard inlet.

(although I am not sure why that is a limitation, the spool can be rotated (as it does when drying) so that RFID tag can be read without having the filament inserted)

If you enter in TPU 95 on the LCD of the printer for the spool in the AMS HT it says it can’t be used and you can’t assign that material to the AMS HT

I don’t see why can’t assign the TPU 95 material to be in the AMS HT with the proviso that you can’t use the standard inlet.

So Bambu should disable the standard inlet feed when TPU 95 is assigned but allow it to be assigned.

As it is now, you put the TPU 95 in the AMS HT but don’t assign any filament to it and treat the AMS HT as a spool holder.

It is a sealed spool holder and you get two rollers with bearings but again, there is more force required to pull out the filament than you would have even on a regular spool holder with no bearings.

Again, because the front roller is connected through gears and not completely free rolling.

which is why you find solutions like this on maker world where they use the rear roller and raise the spool so it doesn’t rest on the front roller

Seems that can differ per device. Mine seems to unlock the gears somehow. At least the drag feels minimal on mine.

Sometimes I run 95A from the HT through the bypass port and into the bypass port on the printer, and sometimes directly from the external spool holder through the buffer. Both are not giving any issues.

Haven’t run through my Ninjaflex 85A on the H2D yet though. Will be soon though.

I think it intended to warn the user that the TPU 95A just can’t run through the automated feeder. And if you assign it through the HT, the printer assumes that you are going to load that filament.

Just keep in mind that whenever you load filament into the printer from a spool that doesn’t go through the inlet of an AMS, it has to be declared as external. Therefore the warning. As soon as you use the bypass port, the HT is not in the loop anymore. It is just a simply “external” dry box.
