What Is the Best Way to Take A Photo of a Model?

Thank you for all of these amazing recommendations! I am changing my pictures right now.

sorry but i think i like your “before” better  :see_no_evil:

It’d be cool to do a Photography tips article between a few of us. Could show a few different levels. Beginner, medium, advanced. Like show a basic phone/white backdrop setup. then could talk about some ways to upgrade it, then at the advanced level talking about what a full pro setup might look like.

good idea! if you get the ball rolling i’m happy to jump in as well

Yes, I know. That’s the same as I thought when I saw it back. But it is hard to do composits without a plain background and I try to keep my thumbnails consistent. This is one of the better base photo’s though, since there was also white in the model I had to take a lot more care while taking the picture. But since all my thumbnails are with different lightning and a different white background this is what makes them at least uniform. And although I also liked my before better, I think it is a quick fix for photo’s with graining/bad lighting/bad camera’s etc. And I think it did elevate the given example photo

if you use lightroom, it now does a really good job in separating the background with a mask, and then you can fine tune to bring it to a brighter state (i’m not a fan of pure white to be honest), and the auto mask does a really good job

i don’t use it for my product shots, as i like to give a pop of colour to the background during the photographing itself, but if i wanted to isolate that’s definitely how i’d go about it

Please give me some recommendations. Here is one of my photos after 10 mins on Photopea:

At this point, I just want to click “Solution” on half of the posts on this topic.

The text is a big improvement! , and the colors jive better.

Here’s a quick photoshop job with some thoughts on improvement.

The text feels crowded on the right side, and could use a little extra breathing room. The space between “Sifter” and “set” are a little far, and there’s a break in the line.

I’d recommend to try and give yourself a little more breathing room when taking photos, so you have more canvas space to work with. This is something I constantly have to remind myself of. It’s good for helping with cropping, but also if you’re adding in other elements like text, it gives more room for those things without crowding the image.

Hope this has been helpful.

one suggestion from my side, but on the photo taking itself, i would have placed the sifter leaning against the bowl, in a diagonal, and shoot it more horizontally if you know what i mean, at least for the cover, than add a couple more photos showing the items individually a bit closer

Awesome idea! If only makerworld section had Community Contributions

Also, echoing Froggy’s “wanting to click [solve] on half of the comments” - this thread is a goldmine for beginners.

I can sticky a thread if someone was willing to boil all of the tips down into a post.

I can do it, I’ll condense, add photos/examples, and such. Will use some of the setups and stuff posted here as well (with credit).

This is the way :ok_hand:

Should I post it in Community Contributions or MakerWorld?

While the post would be classified as a “Community Contribution” I think it would get higher visibility in the MakerWorld section as that section has direct traffic from Markerwold. It would also be really nice to have a “Positive” post in the Makerworld section

That gives us 2 options.

  • Post as a sticky in the Makerworld section of the forum.
  • Post in the Community contributions section and I’ll link a sticky Post with a redirect to the that post.

Thoughts? Either way it’s not set in stone as threads can easily be moved.
