What was 3d prinitng like when you started?

In the past few years, it has felt like there’s been a lot of big changes in the hobbyist 3d printing industry. It has exploded in growth, and the ease with witch new machines can be approached has caused a ballooning consumer segment. It feels like an awesome time to be alive!

How was it when you got started??

It was 2015 for me. Everyone I talked to about it tried to talk me out of it, talking like it was a waste of time and just a gimmick. Things were rough, but starting to take their first steps past hobbled together machines into more refined products. I almost purchased a Makerbot Replicator 5th gen, but fortunately for me I somehow dodged that bullet and found myself with a Robo3D R1+. The darn thing even came incorrectly assembled, and without knowing what I was doing, I somehow managed to get the thing shoved back together right and running. The first 3d print I did was a little shark clip thing.

I don’t know what was going on with Creality at the time. I don’t think the Ender 3 came out until later, and I don’t recall seeing their name much then. Most of the names I saw are long gone by now. Most of the pre-assembled printers were expensive and kits were ripe on aliexpress. I had purchased several kits from aliexpress and assembled them. Back in the days when modding was a required part of the hobby. The kits weren’t so much kits, but a trash can of parts that if you were clever enough, could actually assemble into a working 3d printer.

The one kit I remember the most is my Sunhokey i3 Clone. When I first got my printers, part cooling fans weren’t much of a thing yet, but it had become more so within the year. I added auto level and a part cooling fan to that sunhokey, and got it running where it ran as reliably as my X1! Haha, maybe not to the same quality, but still. I eventually took it a part and used the electronics to build a CoreXY style printer based off the Hypercube. (I recall seeing somewhere once ask if the Hypercube was a open source clone of the X1…)

I miss the delta printers I had. I had eventually sold them, and it’s something I regret. There was a lot of fun and interesting things during those days that slowly made way to the more boring standard experience we have now. When I had my delta printers, I just wasn’t experienced enough, I think, to really understand how to get them working well. There isn’t the flood of kits on aliexpress like their use to be too, so I can’t so easily find myself a kit to build anymore, haha.

I remember days trying to get all of my printers running at the same time. At most I had 4, but I couldn’t get them all to work correctly at the same time. There was always a problem, and as soon as I fixed the problem on one machine, something broke on another.

The 3d printing community on YouTube was bare-bones then too, I remember. Guys like 3d printing nerd and Tom’s were still tiny. Tom in particular, because he had just made the jump from forums to making videos. It was one of his videos on doing some electronics where I first discovered him.

The first rolls of filament I got were Matterhacker’s filament. I remember the blue in particular. It was like a navy blue and had such a nice look to it. I associated plastic with a cheap look, so was just surprised at how nice it looked.

I miss those days, but I’m glad to be past them too, haha. It is really fun to be in the thick of it, in such a huge community driven venture, and nothing felt so out of reach. Put a little elbow grease in and you could be up and running too! Now days though I love to just throw myself into design work and to be able to turn and and throw those models at the printer without so much worry. I still kind of want to put together a kit again; not because I have to, but because I want to.

It is a different game than it used to be.

The past few years have been a gold mine. The increase in availability has been huge. I love being able to order parts and filament and have it to my door in a few days. Way better compared to buying off of a sketchy website and having everything shipped from mainland China. To go along with that, the quality and consistency of materials is much better. Less fussing around with filaments to get them working correctly. Filament technology itself is much better. Printing ABS on a bed slinger was never a fun thing to do, but it was the only option if you wanted anything remotely strong that still printed well. PLA now is stronger, prints faster, and has better color options. Not to forget how good modern engineering filaments are now.

For me it was 2016. Just some dumb high school kid that saw some fun youtube videos and decided to get into it. Wasted almost all of my money from being a dishwasher. My first was a CR-10, which BTW is still a fantastic printer, just slow as can be. That led me into eventually building up small farm of Ender 3 pros. I used to sign up for new loyalty accounts at Microcenter to get the best deals for each one that I bought. I was throwing an obnoxious amount of effort into those things. They all ended up being modified to the moon. I remember how amazed I was when I figured out BL touch.

I was fueling the hobby by mass producing fidget spinners which I sold at my High school and the middle school next door. That business empire lasted for about a year until I was eventually suspended and had to have a strongly worded conversation with the SRO about selling things on school grounds. I probably made close to 5 or 6 thousand dollars doing that, It was well worth it. Just gave me more money to invest into more machines and pretty much paid for my first car.

After that I spent a lot of time invested into Nitro RC planes. My biggest project was a Spitfire replica that had a wingspan of 3 feet.

Then life happened and all of this was pushed to the side until 2022. And I definitely missed a lot. I got rid of a lot of my machines and ended up getting a Prusa MK3 off of craigslist, then didn’t use the thing for 6 months. It never worked correctly. Being at university, I never had time to fiddle and mess with the thing. I eventually upgraded it, then upgraded it some more. That printer of Theseus is now a Core One, which is still odd to think about considering probably 98 percent of the parts have been replaced. I bought a P1P in mid 2023 and was rocking that until a few months ago. It was insane to go from a machine that would need maintenance every other print to something that I could set and forget. That really helped the hobby go from “lets make this machine work” to “lets make some amazing things”. It was mind blowing to get the same quality or better out of a machine in my dorm room as the stratasys printers at my college.

I have recently started fixing / upgrading a old Ender 3 pro for a friend of mine. That experience has really put into perspective how good we have it now. Although I have to admit, we are too fast nowadays. There is something special about pouring care into a machine and making it as good as you can make it. That is a form of mediation that I did miss.

Things were just jank enough to never work right but just close enough to always give you hope the next print will do better. Patience is born through the trials of fire. Now I feel like a grandpa, yelling at all the kids going too fast and not bothering to stop, observe, and learn. Oh well.

MakerBot in the classroom years ago. Lots has changed. Now have a P2S for the past month and living it. @oldschool3dprints

In 2012 someone brought a Makerbot Cupcake 3D printer to a Makerspace meeting. I looked at it, pushed and poked at it a little, and decided I could make something much better myself. I wanted to be able to print full sized human skulls from CT scan data, so I decided my first build would be have about a 300x300x300 mm build volume. At that time the only printers with that sort of volume were many thousands of $ industrial machines.

I scrounged motors, pulleys, belts, linear bearings, etc., and after about 1.5 years had a working printer.However, I ran into the typical problems people had back then- namely, how to get the first layer to stick without having to ■■■■ around with it every time I wanted to print. After a lot of experimenting, I ended up using cast aluminum tooling plate for the bed, covered by a 0.7 mm thick piece of PEI, with a heater the same size as the bed, all sitting on a kinematic mount. This all worked so well I modified a couple makerspace printers and they were greatly improved.

People were doing really dumb stuff with printers back then. They used 4 corner screws to tram the bed (as does Bambu Lab, even today!), glass bed plates, plywood frames/boxes, acrylic frames, 3/4” t-slot frames, heaters smaller than the bed plates, thin extruded aluminum sheet for bed plates, lots of 3D printed parts in structural functions, multiple motors to lift the X axis, resistors for hotend heaters, etc.

I remember that in order to get decent print quality back then I used to measure every spool of filament in 20 places and calculate the average diameter to use in the slicer. The filament makers are much better at controlling the diameter than they were back then.

As I used my first design more and more, I made notes about all the things I didn’t like about it, and redesigned and rebuilt it, this time with an enclosure so I could print ABS, and with electronics mounted in a drawer for easy access.

My third printer design and build was a CoreXY machine with a belt lifted Z axis driven by a single motor with a 30:1 worm drive gear reduction. It’s build envelope is 300x300x695 mm. It has a heated chamber that gets to 55C which allows me to print large ABS objects without warping or delamination. I still use it to print big stuff with a 1mm nozzle. It has no autotramming because it doesn’t need it. I can drag it to my car, lay it on its back, drive it across town, take it out and stand it up and start printing without having to adjust anything. The last time I trammed the bed was over 2 years ago.

And now I have an H2C as well.

Here’s a recent print- the body is in 3 pieces, identical top and bottom about 300mm and the midsection that 600+mm tall. There are 7 or 8 colored pieces inside each of the outer helices. It’s about 4’ tall…

I was really interested in the CR-10. It felt a little bare-bones though, so I never took the plunge. Not sure why I shied away so much considering I was feeling decently comfortable with modding stuff.

I did get a Flying Bear Tornado at one point, and that thing was really junky. That was my first larger sized 3d printer. I did print a large sized catan board with it though. It took up the whole livingroom!

It’s what makes me want to put a Voron kit together. I appreciate how smoothly things run these days, but sometimes the point is the fun of building the machine itself.

I’ve thought before how cool it might be to find an old kit printer from back in the day, and put that together these days.

Lol. Everything was bear bones in 2016.

I like modding stuff as well, but the point getting into it was never to build something from the ground up. I much prefer taking something that is already good and making it better. The big selling point for me was the 300x300 build volume and having it come in a box that could be put together and going in a few hours. Also around that time the community support for Creality machines was the best out there.

I still think that is one of the best printers I ever owned. I got rid of it a few years ago for a Neptune 3 max, but turned out that machine was a certified POS.

I think that if I ever go that far I am going to build something fully custom. And probably a pellet extruder.

I started a while ago. It was probably 2016. The first printers were slow, but you could make them work if your expectations weren’t too high. I used to print musical instruments with them and if I could get a good first layer, it was possible to finish a 16 hour print. I’d get about a 50% success rate.

My first ever printer was this one. It was great for making small prototype parts. And, it was pretty cheap and reliable for back then..

I started in 2015 with a $500 DeltaPrintr kit designed by four college students. It was an amazing delta printer that used fishing line on pulleys to control the print head movement. It even had automatic bed leveling which was somewhat unusual in 2015. My DeltaPrintr was one of the first 3D printers in my rural area. I demonstrated that printer to hundreds of people at local events over several years. It was fascinating to watch. It ran Marlin control firmware on an underpowered processor that would cause pauses in printing if you were on a control screen with any animations such as a spinning fan. It suffered from hot end heat creep which eventually caused clogs in long prints. I usually used SeeMeCNC PLA filament which was hard and brittle compared to today’s PLA materials. Prints were most successful when printed on blue painters tape that was wiped down with alcohol right before printing. It took lots of effort to get good prints, but I really enjoyed that magical machine.

I started with the PrintrBot LC back in 2012 I think it was 2012. Printing then was a labour of love, I pretty much had to re-level the bed for almost every print, spent most of my time trying to gain a 0.00000001 % improvement in print quality, but somehow it was magical.

Almost everything I printed then was in ABS, shrinkage was a nightmare, Kapton tape, hairspray, glue sticks, ABS slurry mix, happy to try anything … it was so much fun !!!

It used 3mm filament, like VHS vs Betamax, I actually found a box of it just before Christmas :slight_smile:

I later switched the Cel Robox printer, which had great quality for the time and some very innovative features like dual heads with needlevalves that closed the flow without lots of retractions and a thermosurface build plate. Got that as a kickstarter … nice machine, but way too small, A1 Mini feels huge … lol

I got burned on a few Kickstarter projects including a filament extruder (Strooder) and fell out of love with printing for a bit. Then I got a Resin printer as my brother wanted to make Mini’s, loved the quality, but what a mess and palaver, but did rekindle my desire to print again.

That brought me to Bambu … somehow I missed the whole prusa and ender stuff.

my very first print, 2013… I used ABS and the corners lifted while printing (of course- open printer, glass bed, etc.). It was a major thrill to see it print after working on the machine for over a year.

The Robo3D R1 (not +) was the first printer that I bought in a store. My first printer was cobbled together from parts that a friend printed for me. It kind of worked, but it was a constant battle.

The R1 had a heated glass plate which was an amazing upgrade over the bare, cold metal plate of my Frankenprinter, and the auto-leveling was impressive! The tweaking needed to keep the R1 printing fairly well was still a lot, but it felt so much better to use. I learned a lot on the R1 because it finally was “modern” and mainstream enough that I could find a lot more information on firmware tweaks and adjustments.

I moved on to “better” printers over the years and finally bit the bullet and bought an P1S back in ‘23 to see what the hype was about and finally understood.

A couple of years ago found my old R1 in a box while cleaning out my attic and decided to see if I could get it going again. To my surprise, I found that I could still get parts for it. I ordered the parts to replace the broken stuff and also the stuff to turn it into an R1+.

I got it all working again, but compared to modern printers it was still garbage. After every print it still needed adjustments to get anything remotely close to the print quality that I’m used to now. It was fun to repair and tweak, but after it was done it just went back in a box and I ended up throwing it away last Summer. I was a bit sad to see it go, but at the same time happy to see it gone!

Now I “just” have a P1S, an H2D, and an H2C as my main working printers. I have a large-volume IDEX printer that is collecting dust under a workbench and a Crealtty resin printer that hasn’t been touched in over a year.

I started in the dark days of 3D printing when you had to be a real man/woman/person to get things working. I remember it like it was 2 years ago, it was a spring day in 2024 and I unboxed a Bambu Labs A1 with this weird filament holder called an AMS. I watched a Youtube video and had it up and running after several minutes, I don’t know if you whipper snappers realize this but printers used to take almost TWENTY minutes from breaking the seal on the box to printing a benchy. Thank your preferred deity that you don’t have to go through the same trauma that us early adopters did.

Fast forward 18 months and I now have two ancient A1’s and a P1S.

I have started a 12 step group to help everyone deal with those dark times.

The BS is strong with this one

I would have a heart attack if I had a printer like the A1 in 2016. Second that with being a combo. No one except the 1000+ dollar machines had multi color capabilities. Even then you were dealing with only 2 to 4 colors because you had multiple independent tool heads.

Clarification. I am referring to multifilament. CMYK inkjet printers have been around for awhile. Still amazing technology but damn it was expensive. We have one in our workshop, each of the cartridges cost about 900 dollars. (Then expire after being open for 2 weeks). I am glad epson never got into FDM 3d printing.

I have had my printer for 4 weeks and have used it every day since I unboxed it so when I started it was literally 30 min and I was printing. My son suggested I get the Bambu Lab printer as it was on sale and much easier for him to guide me through any problems, when needed, as he is in another country now and can talk me through over the phone or send links as this is the type of printer he has.

I’ve printed other people’s prints, joined some patreon pages to support designs I really like, and now I am trying to teach myself how to make/design the things I really want to print.

I’m older, a lot slower than most, but I think I can figure this out with all the forums and youtube videos available. My son really started off putting his own 3D printer together from part purchased online and he had to trouble shoot so many problems… I think I am lucky to be old enough to see other figure things out but young enough to learn a new skill…..

One thing I will say is that when I have reached out to creators on the Bambu Handy app they have all been so polite and kind with their guidance. When the internet can be full of trolls it is lovely to encounter so many nice people in the community.

My very first 3D printer was UP! Mini. Print volume 120 mm square and mainly designed to print with ABS. When printing PLA, the filament often sticked to the inside walls of all metal hotend causing the extruder stop extruding. I ended up applying wery small amount of vegetable oil to the filament just before it entered the hotend. The printer smelled like fries then :slight_smile:
