When Excel meets Filaments
As 3D printing projects grow, filament collections tend to grow with them ![]()
At some point, I stopped asking “Do I have that filament?” and started asking “Where exactly is it, how much is left, and do I need to reorder?”
So… Excel happened ![]()
I built a Filament Inventory Manager to organize filament stock in a structured way, and maybe it’s useful for others too.

What the workbook can do
Filament master database
Store detailed filament information such as:
- Manufacturer
- Material
- Product line
- Color
- RGB color reference
- Material properties
- Printer compatibility
- Multi-material system compatibility
- Drying recommendations
- Print notes
- General comments
Inventory management
Track actual stock:
- Active spools
- Reserve spools
- Storage locations
- Minimum stock thresholds
- Automatic reorder status
This makes it easy to see what is available vs. what should be reordered.
Dashboard overview
Includes a live dashboard with filters / slicers for:
- Manufacturer
- Material
- Product line
- Multi-material compatibility
- Nozzle compatibility
- Status
Quick KPI cards show:
- Total spools
- Active stock
- Reserve stock
- Reorder alerts
Synchronization
The workbook includes synchronization logic.
If you:
- add new filaments
- change filament master data
- remove filaments
…the inventory structure can be synchronized automatically.
This keeps stock data and dashboard consistent.
Helper functions
Included macro functions:
- Synchronize inventory
- Refresh dashboard
- Reset filament database
- Reset inventory
- Show / hide helper columns
Important
This workbook uses VBA macros .
Macros are required for:
- synchronization
- dashboard refresh
- reset buttons
- helper toggles
- workbook controls
Without macros enabled, important functionality will not work correctly.
Please make sure macros are enabled when opening the workbook.
Why I made it
Mostly because filament collections tend to become chaos surprisingly fast ![]()
Maybe it helps someone else keep their filament shelf under control.
