Whether to upgrade to ams pro2 or not

Hi, just looking for your opinions. I have A1 and A1 Mini, plus AMS Lite plus Sunlu S4, the ams lite is used entirely on the A1. Only use PLA PETG on A1 and mini and TPU only on the mini.

Would AMS Pro 2 upgrade be a waste of money or be a benefit over what I gave now?

Well you could use that AMS lite to modify the S4 to what would essentially be an AMS Pro. There are a few prints on MW that allow you to do this. If you don’t want to go that route then I don’t really see any benefit. Drying 8 rolls would be about it.

Seen a couple sunbu conversions, not sure about ability to do them.

Unlikely i need to dry 8 spools. I dry and vac seal bag or ceareal box storage.

Reading some on reddit sounds like unnecessary expense?

In your case it may well be. I personally see no benefit.

Well, there are some quality-of-life improvements brought by the AMS Pro 2. A few off the top of my head:

  • Takes up much less space.
  • Only one PTFE tube to the toolhead, no more forest of tubes extending off of the printer waving around in the air.
  • Sealed chamber better protects the mounted spools from dust and humidity (even if you add one of the drybox systems to the AMS Lite).
  • Allows for drying without shuffling spools into an external dryer. I have the Polydryer system but haven’t used the actual dryer since I added the AMS Pro 2 units to my printers.
  • Allows future expansion of more AMS units. I’d really recommend adding at least one AMS HT.
  • More reliable than the AMS Lite. Mine works and I still use it, but it is rather finicky. The AMS Pro 2 just works without drama. (maybe I’ve just been lucky)

Only you can decided if any of these factors would be a benefit to you.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to mod the Lite into something that it isn’t. Troubleshooting problems becomes astronomically more difficult if you modify from the baseline config, as we’ve seen in another thread.

It is worth looking at the EIBOS Filament Dryer Series X: TETRAS, it is another of the after market upgrades to your existing AMS gen 1 (like the Sunlu mentioned about).
