I’ve read about this but haven’t been able to find it. Where does one get Chloroform?
In chemical product shops and maybe in pharmacies.
It depends on each country laws.
For whatever good or bad reasons, the laws in the US deem it unobtanium for individuals. For mere hobby purposes, I’m sure it would be off limits. Even if it weren’t, the hassle of getting a permission would render it pointless to pursue. If it were your only option, you’d be better off printing in ABS or something else where you could buy a solvent weld at Home Depot.
super useful info, thanks
While I acknowledge that ABS and acetone smoothing are effective, ABS is an undesirable option until I can fabricate a venting system—a project that keeps being postponed. When I posted the question about a source of chloroform to the OP, I was hoping for a practical answer rather than a theoretical one, which, frankly, isn’t very helpful. It was my hope that the OP had discovered a practical source that a consumer can purchase, not a theoretical one. I’m already aware of the restrictions on acquiring chloroform. Although it is possible to order, the cost is prohibitively high due to regulatory requirements. Plus, the CDC lists it as a known carcinogen, citing studies that have shown that mice who drank chloroform developed kidney cancer. So, I guess, I won’t be using it in my cocktail recipes while tending bar. Gotta love those scholars at the Government, thank you Captain Obvious and Professor Predictable at the CDC!!!
You’re right. (at least 25 characters).
Acetone and Sodium Hypochloride can be found in any hardware store…
Wikipedia
Quite easy to do at home and cheap enough for the tiny amounts of cholorform we might need…
Just saying…
By the way, Tom mentions 3 by name (two are two-part epoxies and one is superglue with a filler) than worked well enough on all the different filament types he tested, including PLA, that when testing them to failure, it was the printed part that failed along some other spot and not the glue bond. In terms of bond strength, that would be as good as it gets and as good as you could hope for, right?
Sorry, I use it at work, so I can’t help with availability info. I’m not from US neither.
I second this. I haven’t had anything stick quite as well as 3D Gloop
