I recently had an individual post a profile to one of my models. My model has a Standard Digital File License so I was kinda shocked that they could do that but apparently you can. We chatted quit a bit about it and I told him it would be fine. However, I’m curious as to how the download points will be distributed?

When a user uploads a print profile for another user’s model, they have the option to keep or donate the points back to the designer.
When selecting a print profile, you will see this message if the points are being donated back:

SDF covers the model not the print profile, thats just settings
I added a profile to a model that had a Creative Commons license so I chose to take the points but the most I ever got was three points which is fine with me. That has happened several times so I always figured the original model got the threshold points.

Correct me if i’m wrong here, but doesn’t the Designer get the points for the print, but the print profile uploader gets points for the actual print profile rating?

Expanding on the answer by @MaKim.
When a model is uploaded there are two sets of points that can be earned.
- Model
- Profile
The model designer always retains the model points.
If the model designer adds a profile, any points awarded to that are given to the model designer.
If a 3rd party adds a print profile to a model they didn’t create, the points can go one of two ways.
- The profile creator can assign them to the model designer.
- The profile designer can retain the points.
Profile points are only awarded if the rating of the profile exists and remains at 4.0 or higher.
If a model is downloaded 50 times…
- The model points are awarded to the model designer
- The profile designer points are awarded to the model designer if they created the profile or the 3rd party assigned them over
- The profile designer points are awarded to the 3rd party if the chose not to assign them over
For the purposes of clarification, if a 3rd party profile exists and is used, the model points increase even if the profile points are not awarded to the model designer.

I’ve added a couple of profiles to other people’s models, mostly because I used different material type and did some minor optimizations. I set them to donate points to the model creator. That really seems like the right thing to do. Spending a few minutes optimizing the print just doesn’t seem like something one should get extra points for. The model creator did the hard work. And I’m happy to share my minor work with others while the owner gets the credit they should!

Thanks for the clarification Malac. I kinda figured that original designer got the model points which is why I did not have a problem keeping the 3 points for a profile. I have only done this once and as stated before I have gotten 3 points probably 5 or 6 times. So to me the main beneficiary of my added profile is the original designer who would not have gotten the model points otherwise, 85 downloads and 35 prints so far. Also, if I’m not mistaken it has been boosted a few times and those points went to the designer as well, but I could be wrong on that. So if someone comes along and wants to post another profile to one of my models and that profile is popular I will benefit more than them so have at it.
I’m not going to go fishing all around Maker World looking for models to alter to scavenge 3 points ever now and again, but there probably are people that do.
